Hi need help with my W124 E300- 24v, it use to cut out when warm and then only start when cold. Changed the Over Voltage Protection Relay (new one from MB) no luck. Now it doesn't even start it just ticks over, AA said it maybe the crank shaft sensor or the coil. Any ideas?

The CPS is a common fault, you can measure it with an Ω mter.

It should measure 1kΩ when good and very high Ω when bad.

I presume that fuel is coming through

Thanks for the reply, I'm told it could also be the fuel relay. AA did carry out a test using a jumper. However it was 11pm at night so not sure if the test was carried out correctly. I may do the test on the relay tonight, if I turn the key I can hear the pump switch on. Is that a clue?

problem fixed it was the dizzy cap, lesson to be learned always get a second opinion. After the AA and a Merc specialised mechanic looked at the car both said it was crank sensor. ****** W*****S!!!

its right on the very front of the cylinderhead, between it and the radiator, held on with some allen bolts

Hi Brian, had mine cleaned up the other day. Started first go, but i need to have mine changed. Just today after 3 weeks of trying to find out the problem I took it for a drive. Just after 2 miles it started cutting out again.

Similar car (300-CE-24 Cab) and identical problem. Leave for 4>5 days and needs a single clean of the dizzy cap; leave for 2+ weeks though and takes 3 or 4 run > stall > clean iterations before all finally good.

Anyone ever got to the root cause of the problem? I've learnt to live with it but could never sell the car as it is....

Neil
