1994 E220 auto. Has intermittent starting problem

My normally well functioning and serviced E220 now quite often doesnt start,sometimes hot ,sometimes cold.
The battery is fine and the starter motor functions but it wont fire.
The last time my wife (parked on a double yellow) left the car taxied home and I taxied back,nothing would start it ,one last try just before the AA arrived ,and fired straight away.
At all other times it behaves perfectly.
I would be grateful for any ideas.
