SWMBO has manged to blow up the RH front speaker, she likes her Led Zep loud, you see? Me too, but I tend to back it off when the distortion gets too much.

Anyway, the car has a Blaupunkt head unit, (something DJ) that does RDS FM, tapes and CD changer control, and I'd like to keep the head unit but upgrade the noisy bits. Any tips for good quality units that drop in?

Also, anyone know if this unit can run a subwofer as the current set up hates playing anything bass heavy such as Fun Lovin Criminals, Led Zep, Bob Marley, SRV, Eminem and so on.....

TIA,

Jim

You're pretty limited by the power handling and bass capabilities of the front speakers. If you roll off the bass to the front speakers and use a sub you'll increase the volume you can get out of them significantly but they will still be the limiting factor

Rainbow make drop-in replacement front speakers for about £60 and they have a good reputation. But they're still 11 cm speakers with low power handling

The older Blaupunkts don't have a sub out so you may have to use an external crossover and a pair of amps - one for the fronts and one for the sub. I'd try 120 Hz high-pass for the fronts and something like 80 Hz low-pass for the woofer. A decent amp will make a huge difference. Many now have decent crossovers built-in so a 4-channel amp with LP and HP filters may be all you need
