Hi, I'm new to this, only just discovered this forum and must say its really amazing, as there's so much info on here :D

Anyway, the problem I have is on a '95 S420 on which the power steering whines loudly on start-up and then seems to go away. I read on here that its most likely to be caused by low power steering fluid, but was wondering, is that something I can check and top up myself?

This happened a few years ago, and on taking it to Mercedes, they replaced the power steering pump which has got me thinking :?

Any help would be much appreciated.

as you look int he engine bay, there is a black lid, about 3" diameter with "power steerring" on it.. its at the front of the engine, as you look at on the right at the top.

any standard ATF (auto transmission fluid) is fine according to MB (i had to top mine up a month ago and pghones the rtech centre in stuttgart...)

Thanks a lot for the replies. However, I think I'm being really stupid but I can't seem to find a cap that says power steering on it. If I've lifted the bonnet and standing in front of the car looking at the engine, where is it situated?

Thanks again for all the help.

Theres no point telling you to look for the power steering pump mate.
Best bet is to run it into any garage and ask someone to point it out to you.Good luck. Even buy a haynes manual.....
