hi guys, over the last two weeks or so i've noticed my yellow RAD light come on meaning that i need to check the water level.

I have checked the water level and indeed the expansion tank was empty so topped it up with coolant, a few days later, same thing happened, odd i thought... but filled it again, took a quick look around the radiator noticed no obvious leakage. Today yet again same problem so pulled up to a car shop and bought some more coolant, when i came out of the shop noticed a very small puddle beneath my engine, so pulled the car back and smelt the liquid, it looked like coolant.

I then looked more closely at the radiator and it seemed dry on the outside, but there was water dropping from the Alternator area, i just couldnt pin point from where...

so, if my rad is ok (and i'm not sure yet) then whats the obvious problem ? my water pump or a hose or ???

advise appreciated

cheers

The water pumps are very common on your 111 engine anyweb. They leak out off the bottom as it leaks passed the bearing.

Just out your finger under the water pump, and you will feel if it is wet (engine off) water pump is common

My water pump was replaced last April, by Independ, €200 including labor, not MB part. It started as a slow leak from the pump, the water was blown on to the belt by the fan and the belt drenched the alternator causing the car to almost cut out
I was lucky, as I was only a mile from home. A small leak can turn big very rapidly so don’t drive very far and keep a close eye on the temperature.

mine leaked like a sieve for 3 days on to the belt, after i flushed the system.
I was topping up every day.
Then mysteriously, it stopped. and that wasthe end of the leak.

There's your answer if you want it to last.
Don't go to Stockholm!

I was living there then:D

The cost was not that high back then in 1992, £125 fitted by MB
