There is a listed fault for cars with BAS another is did you leave the key in the ignition when you changed the battery, but not sure of this on a 1996 car

Hi,
That solution only works on petrol models with the Scorpion Alarm/immobiliser.
I have never had any dealings with bypassing the immobiliser on a diesel but apparently it is done through a "coded" fuel valve, where this valve is or how to bypass it, i don,t know.
You could try MB parts and look at the fuel system and ask if any of the valves in the system have to be coded to your chassis no./car.
Syncronising the key won,t make any difference, as the fob unlocks/locks the car. Couple of things to try,
1, Replace your remote batteries, even though it locks/unlocks they can still need replacing.
2, Try using your spare key.
3, Disconnect/reconnect car battery. (leave disconnected for approx. 2 mins.)
4, Check the car battery is fully charged.
5, The fuses you are on about are they the ones on the alarm control box in the passenger footwell, if so check continuity through these as mine were in very poor condition.
You talk about the red & green L.E.D.'s in the rear view mirror, have you got the same in the drivers door? both L.E.D.'s in both the door and the mirror need to be working as this can cause immobiliser issues.
As far as B.A.S. is concerned, as far as i,m aware it was,nt fitted to a W202 until they face lifted it approx. late 1997, early 1998.
I hope I have been of some help.

Yes Andy the BAS did not come in before 1997 for 98 but some argue that they have it:D

I have sent you the k38 paper if fitted it isolates the starter from the immobilizer.

You could be barking up the wrong tree on the faults

I cant read it all but have you tried taking off the battery for 5 mins
