Hi,

I am the current custodian of what was a beautiful 1996 SL60. I say “what was” as someone unfortunely bumped into it in a car park a couple of weeks ago.

The rear light lens was cracked and broken, the metal wing panel was “kissed” but the real problem is that the rear bumper took the brunt of the damage and was cracked and badly scuffed.

Whilst a replacement light cluster lens shouldn’t be too hard to find, the rear bumper is proving VERY difficult to find.

Can any of you give me any advice or pointers in where to look? Is there a specific part number for this bumper? It looks to be different to the AMG bodykit that I find in online parts directories - unless they are the same part?

Help please?
Bruce

A good bodyshop should be able to repair that bumper correctly if all else fails. I've lost count of the number of times our daily drivers have been damaged in carparks by unidentified drivers. Annoying to say the least.

Thanks Peter.

I've tried most of the usual avenues - and a few of the less well known ones too! - and come up empty-handed so far. As you say, a good body shop should be able to repair the original practically invisibly.

I reversed onto to my drive 8 years back in the SL as was driving it a bit more as S was having work done. Got my positioning wrong, thinking i was in the S. Reversed into a low wall and cracked the bumper. My local spray shop put a bonded plate behind the crack and resprayed. 8 years later all good.
Really need to find good known shop.

A body shop that deals with mostly insurance repairs won't touch it. They can make more money by just replacing things like bumpers than repairing them.
All plastic bumpers are repairable, they just take time and effort in bonding or stitching cracks and ironing out creases.
When I needed it doing for my wife's Micra I found an old style body shop that did it perfectly.
Perseverance in finding one is the key.

Lovely car.
New bumper - don't be silly.
A bodyshop will have that good as new.

Possibly a bit too far for you but I have used this guy for over 20 years & his father before. He comes very well recommended.

It is a facelift AMG rear bumper. If you don't find an OEM part, plenty of after market ones available.
Mine was destroyed beyond repair... that's what I though. Then a good body shop came in and did their magic.. easy peazy.

The OEM part number is A1298800471

I hate to see people fall victims to imbeciles. I hope you get it repaired to your satisfaction and once it is, don’t take it to a public place again! These types of cars are too special to leave around modern synthetic crap.
