Anybody know the part no. and cost for a dipstick from the dealer?
Can I buy a universal dipstick? If so where from?
What AFT should I use MB, Dextron 2 or Dextron 3?

If I can't get a dipstick would a net curtain wire do the trick if somebody could tell me what graduations to put on the wire?

Thanks

I am quite happy to buy one and put the details up, what a good idea.

For the 722.6 box. Dunno what yours is, you should check first.

Net curtain wire is a ****** good idea actually. I think I might try that! Just make sure its absolutely perfectly clean, and that no bits of fluff can come off it!

He's not joking! I just made a curtain wire dipstick, it works just fine, there is a posting somewhere on this site that gives a close up photo of the MB dipstick showing the graduations, these can be transferred to the home brewed one with permanent marker. I have a photo I could post but its on my laptop at work, I am sure that with a little searching the one on this forum could be found. Mine cost me 40p for a metre and a half of curtain wire, make a loop in one end secured with a couple of cable ties, mark off the business end and you are away! Ive seen second hand dipsticks go for £30 on ebay!

I just noticed that parrot of doom has attached the photo!

Forgot to say, use white covered wire, the fluid shows up really well on it!

So you have to buy a dipstick to check the fluid? (or make one)

Unless you have a dipstick already fitted the cap is closed off. You then have to make/buy a dipstick if you wish to check the level

Contact the dealer parts department, give them your VIN, and they'll inform you exactly which fluid you need. It'll very likely be MB branded stuff, about £7 a litre IIRC. You'll also need a pan gasket, and a gearbox filter. Expect a bill of around £70-£80.

Actually thats not a bad idea, the stick reads from the bottom up, i.e. it bottoms out, so if he knows how far up the mark is he saves himself £20.

You should use a synthetic atf, in my experience the cheapest available suitable type was the MB stuff @ around £8litre, when changing the oil you may find you do not have a drain plug in the torque converter (i didn't, so i replaced the oil and filter then drained down twice more after a run, you'll need 8.5 litres for this) i'll measure my dipstick when i get home and post result. one other problem you may encounter when removing the sump, is seized bolts! these seize in the aluminium retaining clamps, the weak bolts then snap off! leaving the clamp still attached. on mine one front one was like this and this appears to be the favourite (it's the one that is different to the others) I managed to get mine off and re-use, i replaced all the bolts with better quality items used a small amount of loctite 222 on the threads and copperslip on the shank (don't over tighten) If i did another i would arm myself with new clamps and screws. (others have posted the same problem)
