1997 E230 Auto, Misfiring Problems

I friend of mine has a 1997 E230 which has problems with a misfire when accelerating, doesn't matter whether the throttle is half open of fully open.

You can here it missing through the exhaust/AFM, plug gaps seem to be fine, air flow mater has been cleaned etc

Are there any common faults on these cars that cause this problem?

It very much sounds like a air mass sensor fault, cleaning it can sometimes help but not always. My guess would be to try one. get one from a bosch agent as they are a great deal cheaper then a dealer.

OK, are they a common failure on these? the car has done around 140k miles.

MAF failure is very common and mileage doesnt really have a lot to do with it either. Only buy a Bosch MAF dont be tempted to buy one off ebay for £40 as they are just china made replicas that can cause more problems.
