1997 SL 280 advice please(newbie)

Thinking of purchasing one of these as a weekend toy.......any advice ...pitfalls.....things to watch out for greatly received......the car does not have a hard top is this a deal breaker or a bargaining tool ????

The parts are VERY expensive---a hard decent top (if you can find a good one) will set you back a four fig sum---any damaged or rusty parts knock thousands off ?
Having all said that --a mint low milage one is an appreciating asset.
