Hi All,

My first time posting here, as I have only just recently entered the world of Mercs - so its nice to cyber meet you all !!.

I was wondering if I could make a fool of myself as I am so new to mercs and the question I need to ask is probably so simple to remedy that alot of you will just laugh but here goes..

Obviously having just bought the CLK (I got it for a good price) I found it was in a terible state cleanliness wise inside and out. I have tidied up the inside and the outside, and under the bonnet was absolutely filthy, to the point that it really let the car down. So i embarked off to the local Halfords and bought some gunk and did the business. I left the gunk for 10 minutes and lightly jet washed the crap off, taking as much care as possible not to hit things I could do with out hitting - i.e electrics.

This was on Sunday (two days ago). Last night I had a need to go to hospital so I jumped in and approximately two miles down the road it started running on two cylinders, so I limped it a further two miles to hospital where I stopped it and started it up again immmediately. As soon as I did this it was firing on all cylinders again.

Coming home from the hospital it did exactly the same. I am confident that it has got some water in somewhere, but dont know the engine well enough to start pulling things out and spraying with WD & drying them - can any of you point me in the right direction by description where I should be attacking ??

I would really appreciate it !!

Ta

Richard

Hi and welcome, your best bet would be to get your car on STAR (MB Diagnostics) to see what fault codes are there, but you may be lucky and it was just water shorting out the sparks.

Put your location in your profile, it will help if anyone needs to refer you to a trusted mechanic who may be near you.

One check that you could make it to lift the lids on the fuse box with 2 lids and see if there is any water or moisture in it

Hi,
Check for moisture around the coil packs and plug leads.
They are fitted below the red centre cover of the rocker cover, just remove the 3 allen screws securing it. Be careful with the handling of the LT cabling as earlier vehicles there was a known fault with cabling decaying through heat etc. though yours should,nt have an issue as I believe the wiring was upgraded by then.

You have all been excellent - and thank you for not laughing too much !!!

I have attacked as much wiring and electricals as I can with a rag and some WD40, but have not lifted that cover - top tip Andy, will do that tomorrow !!

Mark - I had already saved that herts merx site under my favourties and was going to ask if you or anybody could say if they were any good so I guess that answers that one.

I will update you all tomorrow as to the outcome of the rocker cover removal tomorrow !!

Thank you all and take care !!

OK - Sorted Now

I have to plug someone who I visited today - they were amazing and totally reccommended. I took the advice of you all, but was reluctant in myself to remove the coil packs so couldnt check all areas under the cover.

I went to Herts Merx today, and I really felt I owed it to them to just really pout a shout out for anybody in the bed herts and bucks areas. They were amazing, doing over and above what i needed doing. They are currently (this is really great to know) free vehicle checks and giving reports on any problems - but with no obligation. I have to say tho, that they are dead honest, dead friendly and definately took care of me and my poorly CLK (and at very good prices !) - it runs like a dream now.

Like I say - I am so impressed that I wanted to give anybody who hasnt used them yet a heads up - http://www.hertsmerx.co.uk.

Thank you Mark for suggesting them to me and allthe advice, I hope to be quite regular here !!

Take care all & go visit them !!

Hey Mark

Yeah definately worthwhile - brilliant they are !!.

It was nothing major in the end, on the cylinder nearest the back of the engine, the spark plug is topped with one of the coil packs, and it was this one that was drenched in water - resulting in the coil shutting down itself and the other linked cylinder.

they put new plugs in and adjusted the wheel bearings as they had alot of play in them top and bottom. He remedied the reverse light on the drivers side which wasnt working. Whilst looking round he took out the excess slack out of the throttle cable & gave it 1/2 free of charge look over - resulting in me knowing all the I need to know about the car !! He also put it on STAR and cleared all stored faults, and remedied the existing ones - and then took it for a 15 test drive to make sure he was totally satisfied !!

Just Awsome (and as an example all of that cost me just £120) !!
