Can anybody help me? I am looking at buying an SL. The current owner has told me there are two electrical faults on the car. The 1st is that the previous owner has removed the two lightbulbs from above the rear view mirror. The 2nd is the roll bar warning light stays on. Could these be minor sensor problems or is it a car to keep clear of. the owner has admitted he has had a quote to fit a new computer.

Hello Paul and welcome to the forum,,, the roll bar is the worrying bit as the roof will not work with this fault showing up.

You can re set the roll bar,if it can be by raising it and holding the switch in the up mode for a few seconds in key 2

There are many sensors but the most expensive bit is the roof controler, the 1999 car will have a good spec what is the price being asked

hi paul, good advice above.

the roof controllers are incredibly expensive new, but certain faults with them can be fixed by specialist companies. a common cause of controller failure is jump starting, a real no-no on a 129 sl.

to ascertain the true and full nature of your faults, you would really need to visit a good independant specialist.

Thanks very much for the replies. I have spoken to the owner about the roll bar light again and he says it does not stay on all of the time. When the hard top is on the car it never comes on. It only comes on now and again when the soft top is in use. I think I will try to get it looked at by a specialist.
The car is low mileage and he is looking for about £10800 but the cost of sorting the problems will have to be reflected for me to buy it. I have looked at a number of cars and shall we say that some people been going to spec savers and buying rose coloured glasses.

OK thanks for the update,,on a 1999 car the main sensor is under the rear of the console.

If the roof is working or does work, then the main roof ecu will be OK. I can let you have the location of all of the sensor and re setting.

That price is not bad at all,,where are you in the UK
