Hello all im new to this and in need of some help please. i purchased my 99 e300td 3weeks ago and it has been running like new until 2 days ago.i pulled out of my drive and noticed a strange grinding from under car when put in drive,as i drove on abit further it went into 2nd and noise went and car carried on in all gears smoothly, until i came to a stop again.pulled over and put in N the grinding was there, put in reverse it stopped, put in P the noise again came back,i put in drive and it stopped noise until i pulled off and reached 2nd gear then it was fine.got to a transmission garage and they couldnt fit car in for a few days(busy)so left and as i got no further then 5miles up road,i was doing 30mph lost all gears, coasted off road parked up.turnt car off and started again, drove a short distance and lost gears again.had to be recovered.on draining fluid and removing the transmission pan i found lots of metal shavings but more concerning to me what looked like remains of a roller bearing!!about 11 of the rollers i managed to find.im gutted to say the least as i am on a short budget as i just purchased this car.can it be fixed or is my car doomed?hope you can shed some light on my problem please as its much needed.darren

no joy with mb southampton yet,has anyone had a similiar problem like mine before?the noise is like a whineing/scrapeing when in P or N,put in gear and it stops it but doesnt feel right when driving off until you hit 2nd gear and it feels normal!!

I would not drive it till it is sorted as you might be able to have it repaired instead of replaced. Hope this helps

oh dear, that bad isit? was hoping it wasnt going to be that serious. one other thing, like i said i purchased this car nearly 4 weeks ago, isit possible the fault was picked up or is it just one of those things?its a lovely motor, full service history but due new one soon,i have had an e class and c class mercs b4 which ive gota say had a few little probs, but for something as major as this to happen through normal driving is crazy.will think twice in future i think.thanx
