i got my air con regassed but unfortunately this did not work, i then took it to a merc dealer who said that the sensor was not working, when asked to cost this i was told that the dashboard had to come of to replace the sensor, is there an easier and more cheaper way to replace this sensor? i was quoted at £300. can anyone please let me know how the EC button works?

Hi,
With the EC button illuminated the A/C will be off, when you had it recharged were the fault codes cleared by STAR (MB diagnostic tool). As this "may" stop the system from working correctly.
When MB diagnosed the sensor being faulty, did they say which one? As there are 2 I believe, heater matrix temp sensor, and Evaporator sensor, as far as I,m aware neither of these need the dash to be removed, only the lower panels one is expensive "ish" at £40 IIRC and the other is less but cannot remember how much.
The chances are it will be the Evap sensor gone.
Very easy to fit once they are located, as they just sit in the heater ducting, with one electrical plug on it.
I would take it to a good independant as I believe you,ll half that price at least.
Where in the UK are you?

i am in teesside, and no, the fault code was not cleared after i had it regassed, which was done by a local mobile gassing mechanic, I took my car to a merc mechanic but they were not main dealers, all i was told was that the sensor was behind the dash, and it was a pig of a job and very costly, to do. this fitter said that the part was cheap it was the labour that cost the money, i have downloaded some great info for accessing trouble codes/ and erasing trouble codes, but am reluctant to try this as i am not very competant, if it is the evap sensor, where would i lokk for it?

It was probably the evap temp sensor. Very common.

can a lay person such as myself do this job, and if so can you let me know a)how to find this sensor, and b) how will i know if this sensor is working or not

when you say lower panels, is this the panels on the dash? and if it is the evap sensor how will i get to that one are you talking about the heater ducting inside the car?

Hi,
I monitored the Evap temp sensor in the diagnostic menu with the heating system at various temps, I did come to the conclusion that mine was OK, but I did,nt know for definate till it was plugged into a STAR machine. Try clearing the codes using the diagnostic procedure you have downloaded you can,t do any harm.
Yes the lower panels on the dash IIRC correctly access to one of the sensors is on the N/S and the other is on the O/S after removing the lower dash panels.
I did find info on the location and replacement of these sensors for 210 from an american forum but as it was,nt a 202 i never saved it.
If you find the Evaporator and the heater matrix each has a sensor that is sat in the heater ducting adjacent to the each item.
I have found this, it might give you some idea where to look, though the car is LHD.
