Ive just measured my valve clearance,, these are the readings...

Exhaust value Inlet value
8 0.18 8 0.08
7 0.18 7 0.1
6 0.23 6 0.1
5 0.12 5 0.1
4 0.18 4 0.1
3 0.18 3 0.1
2 0.25 2 0.06
1 0.18 1 0.08

Is it common for the clearance to be less then specified? id have assumed that clearance increase with engine age (167000 miles)

Exhaust should be 0.25 - 0.35
Inlet should be 0.10 - 0.20

Hi Chris,
All of the Mercs I have owned through the years have shown that the clearance gets less and less as the valve beds in to the head more and more. I remember the clearance got so tight on my 240D that it kept the valve ever so slightly open resulting no compression.
Saying that I never had a 16 valver.

Regards
Mike

Chris
my brother used to work in an engine overhaul shop so there was no problem at the time. Saying that all the old Mercs I owned didnt have shim adjustment-just old fashoned spanner adjustment. Only thing I used to get done is to renew valve seats, reface or replace valves. Im sure if you visted your local engine overhaul shop you should have no problem.

Regards
Mike
