2002 sl 500 engine cutting out

i have a 2002 sl with 61,000 miles not due for service for another 5500miles.
a couple of weeks ago the engine was idling for about 30mins as i was on the phone all of a sudden the engine just died.
i tried starting the engine using keyless go button , wouldnt start, tried it a few times again wouldnt start.
After bout 15mins car started displaying the orange engine diagnosic light, i drove the car home put in the garage left it.
the next day the light was gone engine was fine ????
a couple more weeks went by once it again exactly the same thing, though the next day the engine was fine started normally although light stayed on.
i was planning to get the car into merc when the light went off and stayed off for about a week.
Yesterday the light returned stayed on all day and today drove the car normally for about 2 hours, when the engine started spluttering and when putting my foot down theres no real power there, even whilst parked the engine feels to be ticking faster and slower but the rev counter stays at just below 1000rpms.
on opening the bonnet the engine appears to be rocking as if it is just going to cut out at any time, any ideas of this problem and how easy is it to be fixed , please help!!!!!!

It could well be the MAF if its the original,its one of the things that could cause your problem.

Welcome to the forum,not always easy on these things. cheaper to buy from a Bosch agent, about £58 and fit it into your own plastic casing.
