Hi I hope someone might be able to shed some light on the problem with my vehicle..it has been to mercedes and faults read robbed me and then told me i need to go to a specialist re the box.
It started very shortly after they replaced an injector. Un related im sure! Firstly the reversing sensors failed and i was unable to start the vehicle in Park only in neutral. Then when engaging gear the geabox light came on and it went into limp mode. On resterting i could drive it but it then started not changing gear and ending up in limp mode again.
I took it to mercedes.. they couldn't tell me the problem other than gearbox.. but i had asked them to check the battery as I read it as 11.3V on changing gear..they made no comment on battery although it does need recharging if vehicle is left a few days. I also asked for them to reset the parameters on the ecu to which they said REVERSE the problem starts again..
Does anyone one have any knowledge on this.. Is it the brake sensor/reversing sensors shorting or a problem with ecu or gearbox or the battery as it appears i can only reset when battery has been on charge.

Many many thanks in advance

In my experience with these sort of problems with the V class it is usually the wiring that has been damaged or corroded in or close to the main transmission plug. Occasionally engine problems can induce emergency gearbox mode.

The only way to check the wiring is to measure resistance along it.

I don't see how the battery will effect the problem if the engine is running and charging the battery.

If the fault is reproducible then perhaps the first thing to do is get it to a Star Diagnosis machine and see what the values are from both the engine and gearbox.

gearbox V220cdi

Hi
Checked all wires no visible signs of damage or corrosion.
I have now managed to reset just by pressing hard on break pedal when starting. But it will only start in neutral and not park as it should. On wriggling the gear shift leaver in park and trurning the key if makes contact but insufficient to start. When i put the vehicle in reverse it clanks and gearbox goes into limp mode again ( only reverse amd 3rd working).

Thanks so far

only my penny imput here but get your battery checked thoroughly and your charging system , in my experiance there may be 12v but no power , in any case there should be nearer 13 v and nearer 14v when running , if there is only 12v when you go to start its not enough and not a lot of amps(power), these modern systems are very susceptible to voltage imputs at low levels.

Hi
Funny you should say that. I had paid mercedes to check the battery but it appears they didnt because yesterday i checked it and found on cracking it dropped below 11.5 V which i know can cause problems with mercedes and other vehicles. So i went to another mercedes garage and have bought a new battery.. Now starts in park drives but still has a problem when you put in reverse.
Problem when you put in reverse it clunks and the gearbox light on dash lights up and car now only drives in limp mode until I reset by turning off and starting again.
I also changed the brake pedal switch just in case it was this causing a problem.

Any further ideas / solutions would be much appreciated.

v class gearbox problem fixed..

hi
Having worked out it was not the gearbox itself i changed the gearbox sensor control unit on the side of the box as i realised it was not recognising what gear it was in ,and problem is now fixed !!! I might just say 1st mercedes garage said it was internal gearbox problem and charged a fortune for the misdiagnostics.. and also said it couldnt be electrical haha

As posted earlier a lot of problems with the V-Class can and are wiring related. Battery voltage will drop below 11.5v when cranking it over but it should return to over 13 volts as soon as it starts and up to 14,5 volts when running.

Glad you managed to sort yours out and thanks for posting your findings

I know this is an old thread but can I just check that the part you replaced was the auto box control unit? I'm having similar problems with my vehicle and I'm hitting dead ends when I have taken it to Mercedes and auto box specialists. Thanks in advance for any info.
