Was just driving and ESP display has come up on the car saying visit workshop car was driving fine until this happened now it's all over the road I've just had a diagnostic dome and it's come up with fault codes C1170 steering angle sensor and B1000 faulty control unit? Anyone else had this problem and is it easy to sort out or a major job? And what sort of price should I be paying? Also can any normal garage fix this or will it have to be a Mercedes specialist?

I think that the lamp will go out on replacing the ECU, but not 100% on it.

Anyone can change it

Steering angle sensor is in the steering column just below the steering wheel, part of the Contact Spiral

Sorry that is very wrong, the clock spring just plugs into it, it is not part of the ECU, they are 2 separate things

Certainly not under the dash! :)

This is a different model but the procedure will be essentially the same. Expect to pay approx £230 from MB for the part. The SAS isn't available separately from the Contact Spiral

Should have added the new part should come with a locking key, to prevent the spiral from turning. If the part is allowed to turn too far during assembly it could break spiral.

Fair enough so steering wheel and air bag off to do it, it may need coding as a 2009 car, but if no ESP lamp on that is not important and it can be done any time.

Please tell your guy not to turn the ignition on with the air bag removed or he will need STAR to turn the SRS lamp off.

He will need a thin 2" long 30 torx to undo the 2 screws behind the steering wheel

I'm going to have a go myself as I'm a mechanic anyway I don't think it will need coding as car is only a 2002 so basically it's behind the airbag ?

Steering wheel needs to come off, so below that.

pm me your VIN and I should be able to get the correct part number for you?

Ok thanks just before I go ripping it apart I've noticed the steering wheel itself is of alignment by quite a few inches it was never like this before always drove in a straight line, also are there any fuses that could cause this before I go ripping the whole thing apart?

Has there been any work on the suspension, had tracking done?

If the alignment indices on the shaft/wheel (as in the video) are ok then would suggest tracking is out. Have you hit a pothole?

as above a pot hole or steering work done can cause it, and if you are driving ahead with the steering wheel out of line that will be the reason and not the ESP ecu

It is important that the wheel is locked in the straight ahead position when they are doing it or you will be wasting your money

Ok I've had the tracking done which was way out, the car is still the same though is there anyway I can recall rate this now? I've tried wiping fault away but still coming up as steering angle sensor fault zero point variation ? Anyone know the cheapest place to buy one of these? And how much am I looking at?
