Thinking of buying a run about as the 2015 X5 is getting near 30know and due its 3rd service, An Sclass wud be the order of the day, but not intending to spend more than £2k.
Came across a very clean 2003 Eclass 2.6L e240 petrol...
Now merc diesels I know about, but the petrol ..very smooth... petrol engine I know nothing about . Is it as good as the diesels, does it have any flaws, timing chains etc. and what is the average fuel consumption.

The M112 is a rock solid engine and Uber reliable.
Ours (in a 210 estate) has 145k on it and for the last 30k hadn't missed a beat (after the CPS was changed for £50).
On a trip on French motorways we regularly get 31-32mpg. On my 40 mile cross country commute 28-31mpg. Round town will struggle to see north of 20mpg.

As above.
My W202 C280 has the 2.8 version of the M112 engine. It's refined and powerful and is good on fuel, using very little more petrol than my C200 used. Never had a problem!
Go for it.

Just an afterthought. Check the crankshaft pulley doesn't wobble at all. I understand there was a recall in the U S for this as it incorporates a harmonic balancer which sometimes disintegrates and can damage the sump. Mine's ok but I have seen this problem with another C280.

2005 CL500.
The M112 and the v8 version the M113 are solid as the proverbial rock. Think of the hp a M113k can produce!

Being used to a diesel you'll hate the lack of torque but you'll love the smoothness....
