1st hello guys, glad to be here. Help!!!!!!! (lol)

My ML has been in the garage for over 5 weeks, it went in for 2 copper rings on the injectors. Came out with 5 Injectors, injector seals, new fuel lines, fuel pressure solenoid, fuel filter and a £1500 bill.

now the problem its running really bad, smoking really really bad, will only start if I put my foot on the accelerator, they have told they have done there best lol, they have blamed the smoking on the inlet manifold flappy things not being there. (not sure) lol, thing is I don't understand it didn't smoke before it went in just cant keep spending money on it

Any help would be appreciated

Check out there is no loose/disconnected vacuum lines on EGR system or turbo... Absence of the manifold flaps alone won't cause bad smoking (they are often removed if the motor is ok or the shunt is done)

Smoke is black/grey, even on tick over there is loads of smoke coming out of it. Its not nice to drive, when stuck in traffic seems the smoke is coming into the car..

Sounds like a faulty injector to me dumping fuel. Should be easy to diagnose with the correct equipment. It happened to me a while back on a Vito. I replaced 2 injectors and a week later it was smoking and misfiring and one of the injectors I fitted went faulty. Another replacement injector was fitted and all was well again.

Was it a Merc specialist or just a normal garage? Maybe get an opinion of an Indie close to you?

Well if it was a MB dealer garage I would sue for incompetent work, not only will star tell you what is wrong it should tell the monkey pressing the keyboard how to fix it too. Or am I missing the point of a £8000 pounds a year access to the databases of MB and the use of a diagnostic tool that costs close to £4000 just a load of crap.

Sue them.

Well its at Merc at the moment. they have just phoned and said Its over fueling (Really!!!) they have said that a non-genuine Fuel filter is fitted and that could be the problem? the injectors are fine.

But the service chap did say there was a split in the intercooler pipe? but dismissed this. I did question this with him, because I thought if more air is going in then more fuel would be going through?

They will try it tomorrow when the engine is cold. fingers crossed on a fuel filter!

Big Surprise, not the fuel filter.. They have done a "short Test" 36 pages later came back with its not the new injectors,

it could be Inlet manifold, turbo and could cost £1000s to put it correct also they did a inspection on things that could be wrong and came with back with a parts list of over £4000 not including labour

£700 on discs for back ones
£550 on discs for front ones
£2700 on ball joints and track rod ends
£250 on bulbs
£700 seat belt tensioner
£600 Front seat heated
Plus other little bits.

Feel like finding the nearest cliff at the moment... lol.

Can anyone HELP!!!!!!!!! Please

Very simply - Get it out of there immediately.

Find your nearest independent - the facility is on the site here - and get them to look at it. Stop wasting money with main dealers - don't those prices tell you enough?

Regards

Bill

Use the specialist finder on MB Owners Forum!

Good Luck with it and hopefully it is something small.

Hi, just a note as to what happened to me. Smoke. I removed the engine cover on my 320CDI. Next, I blew compressed air around each injector, until I found one that blew diesel fuel up into the air: indicating that the injector's copper seal was leaking. After removing the leaking injector (it was covered with baked on diesel fuel, and hard to remove),I cleane the injector seat. I replaced it with a replaced with rebuilt inj. and new bolt and new copper seal. After a few miles it started smoking again on accelerating.
This time I took it appart again. Looked in the hole the ijector goes in, and noticed that the seat was not shiny clean. Rather, it looked rough or porous. I talked to an MB mechanic, who told me that when the injector is leaking at the seal, this causes the seat to get damaged. It needed to be reurfaced. I bought a set of the resurfacing tools for 64 Euros, I used the 17-17mm insert (not the 17-19mm as the instructions said. Put it back together, and gthe car runs like new, and no smoke. Bolt Torque: 7 Nm + 2 times 90degrees. You MUST use NEW bolts

Who put the "new" injectors in? Was it MB and/or was it done correctly with the proper washer. I remember a similar thread a while back where some turkey had put in 2 washers because it wasn't sealing with 1. That resulted in black smoke.

Check there are no air leaks on the input side of the turbo, i.e. between the MAF sensor and the turbo inlet port - I has a similar smoke problem on my 320 a while back that turned out to be down to a loose Jubilee clip on the turbo inlet trunking. If air is allowed to enter the turbo by a route other than past the MAF sensor, the engine will indeed overfuel, as it "thinks" the engine is working flat-out. Check it out - even small air leaks can be significant. A leak on the intercooler side - between the turbo and the inlet manifold - will similarly confuse the EMS. Good luck!
