We've had mercs for many years and recently changed a 1999 230k cabriolet clk for the above.

Is it just me or are mercedes benz skimping on quality. This 2004 200k is built like a Focus compared to my old merc. All the panels are lighter and no solid 'clunk' when closing the doors, everything is inferior, although the engine is impressive for it's size, handling and the brakes are an improvement over the last car.

Only had the car one week and considering changing it. Is the 240 and the 270 diesel heavier built or are they using thinner panels too.?

You hit the issue in your comment. Handling, brakes, fuel consumption has improved - primarily because the car is lighter.
I accept they don't 'feel' as well constructed as the mercs of old. I can see that, even between my current E and my previous one, but live with it for a while and the quality will still show.
I too miss thc door clunk - but they've changed the latches for some reason, fom the big heavy pin block of old to the D style ring thing that everyone else uses. Not sure why but i assume they know what they are doing. At the end of the day, it's still a merc.

They don't change the build with the engine so a 270,320 or even a 55 will be basically the same.

Interesting point the door clunk.
In the MB showroom i was looking at a brand new SL and noticed that the doors sounded much tighter than my 18k mile car.

Railway carrage doors do not clunk now either.

Thanks guys for your comments (jberks & television). Have just done a round trip of 500 miles and car handles very well:D Got a bit blown about on the motorway though which I never noticed ever with my old car:eek: Also viewed 270 diesel and you were right - the build is exactly the same.

Still miss the structure of my old clk230 and probably always will but I am female so need to complain about something!!
