I was looking for a rattle under the bonnet yesterday and I can see one of the pulleys the serpentine belt runs round has lots of play in it. By process of elimination it is not the PS pump, alternator, water pump, AC pump or crank so what does that leave? It's one of the larger pulleys, right in the middle of the engine. If somebody has belt routing diagram for a straight 6 W211 E320 CDI then I would be grateful. Many thanks.

Think I'm the first one ever! Suspected it was the oil pump straight away and started searching for info. However, since I was getting nowhere, I questioned whether it was the oil pump after all, hence my request for a diagram to confirm. Fingers crossed somebody can help. I'm hoping once the rad and fan are out, a la water pump, it shouldn't be too bad.....

On that engine (OM648) im pretty sure the oil pump is chain driven, see printout from WIS:

Not heard of an oil pump driven by the aux belt but maybe there are some

I don't think its an oil pump, a guide or tensioner ?
Sorry I think that image is wrong.

Think this one is correct, belt does not drive oil pump, likely to be the big tensioner attached to waterpump

My guess is water pump, not unusual on these to fail.
