The dealer gave me very little information on what the problem was and so I don't really know what the cause was. He said that part came from inside the engine somewhere - but I can't be certain of that.

To be honest, I just want it correctly diagnosed and fixed.

^^^^^ I was looking to wrap a cloth around the header this weekend and do exactly that - to try and see where the coolant is coming from but have been working all weekend. Will give this a shot tonight.

The other test is whilst its running on idle, properly warmed up, are there any bubbles coming into the header tank, there should not be.

It's currently on the drive as it's been declared dorm. I ran it for 20 mins yesterday and got the temp up to approx 90C. - nothing, not a leak or coolant warning in sight. Yet if I drive it (which I can't while it's dorm) it will happen within 5 mins...... Total nightmare

Where are you based? Someone will recommend a good indy to properly diagnose it

I'm based near Upminster in Essex.... a good garage would be very good and helpful.

I know this is an old post but did anyone ever find the problem? I have the exact same issue on a 2008 GL420! At first i thought it was a thermostat but that didn't work and the problem keeps happening, next step is a new water pump then if that doesn't work its new head gaskets and headers. Absolute nightmare. No one can seem to find the problem at all

Hello there. Any resolution to your water loss/pressurising issues. Same symptoms on my 420.
Thanks

Hi there - this was listed a while ago now, just got a message in my inbox.

I sold the car to a mechanic and spoke to him after selling it - it was a dodgy head gasket. The change apparently fixed it. I wouldn't have minded if I had been made aware before buying it but the car salesperson was a right *!"^ and told me that the car was mechanically sound and charged accordingly!

Good luck with yours mate. There's a test that a mechanic can perform to let you know if it is the head gasket which is cheap and easy to do. Get that done to give you an idea.
