Morning all,
It sounds like the door speaker has blown (not BOSE) The flappy distorted sound is only noticeable on songs with heavy bass.

Second hand parts:
£80-120 UK
£20-30 USA plus postage and duties and admin fees.

The £80 one on ebay looks in poor condition. I've tried finding one at the breakers, Tristar, Dronfields and a few others.

It looks like the individual units can be replaced in the speaker chassis - 3 screws to remove. So, my intent is to try and swap out the unit itself, not the chassis that holds the nest of speakers.

I am guessing the bass speaker is the one that has gone.

Question: Does anyone know the spec for the speaker i.e.ohms and diameter and I might try just replacing the individual unit rather than the entire assembly. After all the standard speaker unit looks similar to the cardboard ones on my old Wharfedale Linton 2 XPs I had as a kid in the 1980s and they were old even then.

I have yet to remove the door card and speaker, I'd rather do this once if possible.

I have read here that the assembly can be brittle and it is difficult to remove one speaker from the chassis. Ok, I'll give it a go anyway/

2009 SL350 R230.

Have the old speaker rebuild ..cost me £50 company in London i think .But you can get them repaired if your happy with the sound out of them before they went down . Its only the outer foam ring that perish through heat, and the sun if on the dashboard .

Hi Dreamer, I think I can replace the unit with a newer one for less than that and probably quite quick and easy to do. Amazing that no one knows what the ohms rating and diameter is. I bet if I asked that question on a Corsa forum there would be a lot of answers :)

My take.
You need to measure the diameter,
my 639's are 6"
the 211's are 6.5".

The 211 speakers, well 2 of 'em, were shot. I replaced all 4 with Bose CH6CK Chaos (4 ohm 60 - 20KHz, 92Db). With a reasonable equaliser (as we have within out HU's) the sound cam come out pretty good. I don't feel a need for additional bass unit.

I cannibalised the original mounts / frames and fitted the Bose into those, then soldered the connections so the original plugs would still fit.
It took a few hours but wasn't overly difficult.
The biggy on connecting is to have them all the same polarity, so some aren't pushing air while others are pulling. But with a DVM you should be able to identify that.
I would replace all 4 to avoid mismatch of sound output.

I would fit the same to the 639, but they would be too big, unfortunately.

Thanks gents. Looks like you did some nice work there AnthonyUK.

At least the door cards look easy enough to deal with. The Range and the old Jeep Wrangler door cards were a pain to work on due to the linkages for locks and handles, this looks much easier. I will remove the blown unit and take a trip to the local ICE dealer to match diameter and maybe get some advice on a suitable match. I am aware that it won't be perfect, but considering the cardboard material used in the MB one, I will probably change both over.

Door cards are not too bad but with cars of this age it is worth having some spare plastic fittings to hand as they do get brittle over time.

Thanks, good tips. I did a few small jobs in the sunshine yesterday. Not quite warm enough yet.
I do find most DIY jobs are more enjoyable with the sun, a beer and a radio.
