200T LPG conversion - pitfalls of conversion

I am considering a conversion to LPG on a 1984 200T and wondered if anyone has any experience or advice on this. Is the car too old to spend a lot of money on? would it enhance the value? Another option I am considering is buying a later (post 1989) 230TE or E220 but I have heard that the conversion could be a problem with a 230 auto as backfiring could occur on kickdown, can anyone confirm this?
