Hi,
I have just bought a 1993 200TE 16V auto with from what I can tell the M111 engine. My first Merc seems a lovely car even if a little underpowered.

The only problem I have is when starting from cold the engine fires up no problem but does not tick over and dies within seconds. I can just about get by by reving it a little but it will still cut out until warm.:???:
When driven for a while and warm it runs great and ticks over fine.

I have read about similar problems with other Merc models but not specifically this one. A lot of posts seem to mention the cold start valve or idle valve but I have no idea if my car has these on it, where they are or if they can be fixed. Also a lot of comment about lose electrical connections but not sure what to wiggle or spray with WD40. Local Merc specialist suggested it may cost £600 to fix but there must be a cheaper way as the car is not worth much more?

Can anyone help with some basic advise ?

Thanks

The first thing to check is the engine loom, remove the cover from the front of the engine, its the black plastic one, below that there are some sensors the wiring to these needs to be checked, its not difficult and if all is ok tape them back up but do have a loot as the condition will give you a rough idea of the rest of the loom.

He said that he thought it was probably the idle control valve although he did think that it had already been replaced as it looked fairly good condition.
I still dont really know where to look for this or if it can be reconditioned rahther than replaced..

Will check the wiring loom but if its anything like the rest of the engine bay it will hopefully be in pretty good nick.

Previous owner had told me that the tickover was hunting a bit sometimes but I have not seen this as yet. Only had the cold start problem but once warm it runs perfectly as far as I can see.
