After my recent win in connection with a constipated 6 CD auto-changer, I started the car yesterday and was presented with the yellow engine management light along with the message "service B exceeded by 12 days".

I have been getting a service countdown since I brought the car back into commission at the beginning of the month, but had been ignoring it for the moment.

Could the EML be related to the service reminder in a cynical ploy by MB to put the frighteners on me and get the car in for a service?

I have now ordered an icarsoft MB V3 OBD code reader and will give my indy a call tomorrow.

Any words of reassurance?

Indy cleared the fault last week and the light went out.

It came back on today and, having now received the OBD code reader I have scanned for faults.

Engine fault code indicates "mixture on cylinder bank 2 is too lean".

The car is going in for B service on Thursday and hopefully they can get to the root of the fault at the same time.

I will probably also get the rear consumer battery changed for peace of mind as it is currently an 80Ah Yuasa YBX5096 which, in the absence of any reference to AGM on the label, I assume to be a standard lead-acid starter battery and R230s seem to demand a deep discharge AGM type from what I have read on here.

too lean indicates too much air, check the hoses for any splits.

Or insufficient fuel or a faulty sensor - I'll let the garage check it out when they have it on the ramp.

Good call on sensor - I assume there must be two if the fault is related to a sensor, otherwise how would it know which bank was affected.

Will suggest to indy on Thursday.

So, car back from service today and EML has been reset by indy.

I am informed that drilling into the fault code on STAR took them to the thermostat which they say can be an issue on the V6's.

Seemingly, running a bit hot can trip the sensor into thinking it is running lean.

New t'stat ordered and will need to see whether the light comes back on in the meantime before it is fitted.

Good luck. Wud have thought the ecm would be smarter than that!! So statt fault has no code? And guessing then that stat is on bank 2 side of motor? I thought stats were now sealed units (ffs) and electrically controlled? If that's the case? A fault should trigger a code.
Any road plse keep us informed, ready to learn somat new, tho old brain says regular statt worked pretty trouble free for 80 plus yr and WAS tuppence to replace.

Not sure how accurate the gauges are but mine ( M112) runs at 90 round town and 80 at dual carriageway speeds. It's got a very very slight weep of fluid coming from somewhere too. Pressure testing booked for Wednesday.

Good call on press test. I don't really thing that's ur bank 2, too lean, but a leak can prevent correct opp temp being reached. temps seem normal near every car has a different normal on guage. Can you swap sensors as previously mentioned?

Quick update.

Light stayed off until the car went back in for new thermostat.

Thermostat, coolant and labour £352.44 (incl VAT) and so far so good.
