Hi all , im hoping someone can help me please .
My c220 which is on around 180k has been letting out lots of blue smoke from the exhaust and a horrific smell . My family and i recently went camping which was an almost 4hr drive , the car was absolutely fine all the way to the campsite travelling at 70mph but when coming to a stop or travelling slowly it would let out this blue smoke and then when accelerating until I get upto a consistent speed or accelerating from slow speed up a steep hill . The next day we visited alton towers and was absolutely fine doing the 30 to 40 mph . We parked the car up spent 8 hours at the theme park but then straight from start up when leaving it started smoking and all the way queing to get out , it was so embarrassing ! It had stopped by the time we got to the campsite which was only a 15 min drive . Started the car next day when leaving the campsite , fine , drove 3.5 hrs , fine , until we got 10 mins away from home where the traffic was slowing and it started again . I checked oil levels ect the day we left for camping and before our trip home and was fine but on way home a yellow message popped up saying to check engine oil levels . Ive checked again today and levels still seem fine . I pulled off the oil cap and underneath the oil cap at first it looked like bits in the oil but on closer inspection it wasn't , I squeezed the "bits" it was more like a gel , wasn't overly alot , 90% of the oil was normal . I had no accelerating problems the whole trip or anything unusual .

have you or do you use any type of Redex engine fuel cleaner when you fill up? it should clean your injectors/fuel system

I've managed to find a bit of time to have a gander under the hood and found that there is a small pool of what I assume is oil around this glow plug , the one closest to the windscreen . I belive its still good as I dont have the glow plug light showing on the dash . Can I assume this is the problem ? If so , is it a blown gasket or an o ring on the plug itself ??

That is known as Black Death on diesel engines. Means the seal on your injector has failed. You need a new seal and a new stretch bolt and then get the engine nice and warm and then pray that the old bolt does not shear off as you undo it!....very common. Then get it all spotlessly clean before fitting the new seal and bolt...to exactly the right torque. Do it ASAP possible or the carbon will glue the injector into place.....making removal much harder.
I did three on my 270 5 pot during my time with it. One bolt snapped and I had to drill it out. One was so stuck in so hard I needed to remove with a slide hammer with a special injector fork adapter. Good luck.

the dry residue chips off easily to clean or with petrol and rags.

New seal all the way.

Essential to clean mating surface of seal to block when replacing. A good garage will have the kit. basically thick nylon brushes. If the faces are not clean - you will be doing it again in a year.

Clean round the bolt to scrape away the crud and spray with plus gas. It will come off easy enough.

Thankyou so much for your replies , I really appreciate your help . Normally I'd tackle most bits myself , I recently took of the egr and swirl flap/throttle body to clean and done an off car cat clean for the first time but im not sure with this one , if the bolt snaps on the driveway then im stuck and would have to call out a mobile mechanic

Not sure the 'black death' would be responsible for your smoking. I'm interested in others thoughts on that.
It may be worth identifying if you have injector issues, the black death being a coincidence.

You can get injectors refurb'ed, but personally I had a bad experience with that and ended up buying new.
I've read the Piezo injectors don't like being horizontal when removed.

lots and lots of aerosol carb cleaner
lots of patience
lots of rag
lots of cleaning
torch
dentists mirror
new injector seals
new injector bolts
cotton buds
scotchbrite
injector seat recutting tool
injector / fuel pipe nut special socket tool
injector removal tool
return pipe new orings get genuine merc . yes theyre expensive for an o ring

dont get carb cleaner or acetone /solvent any where near electrical connectors / rubber o rings /rubber hoses

These can be a proper pain to do '
invest in the tools and take your time .
inspect the seating surface on the head . 99% itll need re cutting . Also check the seat face on the injector for pitting / burn damage

be super dooper careful of the really fragile fuel return take off on the injector . They dont take any effort to snap off . ( ask me how i know )

that forst bit of movement on the injector is the win . Once its started moving , just go bit by bit back and forth , up and down , you get the idea , keep the carb cleaner going arounf to soften the tar .
