2013 E220 CDI
Hi everyone, I recently bought a 63 plate E220 CDI. But I think, I'm getting very low mileage.

Could you guys have a look and see is this normal or something is wrong.
Usually when I'm driving locally, like schools, gym, work. I get very low at around 20mpg. But when I'm driving in around 30-40mph I get around 35mpg.
Sometimes my whole tank lasts me 200 miles only.

I bought this car knowing, I'm supposed to get 40-50 mpg (COMBINED) or a full tank of 400-500+ miles.
Please note my avg. speed was 8mph, I'm getting 19.8mpg. (normal or abnormal)

With an average speed of only 8mph, which I'm guessing over that period of time is city driving, that's to be expected.
I'd go on a long run out of city and see what you get then.
I've got a remapped E250, 254bhp and 600nm torque, and get around 58mpg on a long run and 52-55mpg mixed road commute over a 14 mile distance.

Hello and welcome

You’re not commuting around West Yorkshire are you? As per above with that average speed you’ll never get any fuel economy.

Having said that is the car getting to temperature? Should be up to temp within ~10 mins. If it’s taking a long time that will seriously reduce your economy

Welcome buddy , if I were you I would go and spend 2 hours driving on a motorway at a steady speed (when the road is quiet) , at 70mph and then see if the car is correctly giving 50-60mpg .
It’s hard to judge any car in stop start traffic

It's not really 254 bhp & 600 Nm o_O though , is it ?

Used to have a C63...
As above, it's a heavy old car for stop-start in-town shenanigans, so economy will take a kicking.

Is the car showing circa 90 deg C on the temp gauge? When did it last do a good (40 mins+) run at 60-70mph?

You aren't in anyway doing combined driving which is to average around 50mph to get optimal combined figures, so expecting to get anywhere near it with your driving routine is an unrealistic expectation. I do a mix of town and A road driving and have been getting 43mpg from my E250 which is pretty reasonable and aligns with the combined expected returns.

When doing the town driving you are looking at (although its rare I would be that low average mph), if I leave the auto box to do its thing then it would be low 20's. I can get that up into high 20's by manually shifting up earlier with the paddles.

Another consideration is the distance. If the journeys are less than 10 miles then a diesel won't really even be getting warmed up and will be using more fuel.

So, no, I don't think you are that far out, in reality, if you bought the car expecting 40mpg from predominantly slow city driving then unfortunately that was never going to happen.

You would probably get better performance out of a petrol in your case if these are short distance journeys.

Wow! an average of 20mpg at 8mph over 11 miles is good I doubt the gearbox gets much above 3rd gear. As above the E Class is a heavy car and a real test would be a trip covering 100 miles of mixed motoring Motorway, A and B roads and some urban, although a big car once the inertia is overcome they can be quite economical my E320cdi diesel 2000 reg would return a solid 50mpg in those conditions

If that type of motoring is the norm I would seriously look at electric/hybrid cars

A remapped E350, just shy of 300 bhp.

As said take it on a little road trip on a quiet day, and see what results you achieve.

What year is your E250? I often thought of a remap for mine.

2011, but look at a rolling road map rather than a generic one.
Luckily my son works for Celtic Tuning so was able to spend a lot more time doing wizardry.

Tell your son to talk to the 'marketing' dept to stop them lying about their gains !

No Celtic E250 dyno chart available so we'll begin with 167 BHP E220 .

Now a 167 BHP measures on their 'generous' dyno 189 BHP , so the result will also be a false 215 BHP , a difference of 26 BHP yet the claim is a lying 48 BHP !

Also with the torque 322 lbft to 363 lbft difference of 41 ftlb yet the lying
marketing claim is 68 lbft because it's going from manufacturers 295 lbft .

Now there are honest remapping companies out there , take GAD , a stock 167 bhp 220 CDI on their dyno will put out anywhere from 151-172 BHP . And they quote the result from actual realistic figures . So they often quote as do others for example 35 BHP / 50Nm but in reality this could be more and must be considered a minimum . With Celtic it's a maxed out marketing lie .

Now I'm not saying every manufacturer figures are accurate on a dyno ( 250 CDI ) are even lower on average , but when you have one company with particularly high stock readings...
