Hello everybody.

Wifes car has the malfunction light come on the other day. It's a 2014 E350 diesel.

Does anyone know how to find out what the malfunction light is referring to? It doesn't give any further information and the car drives as normal.

Which warning light is it?

If it’s the engine warning light then it’s probably emissions related, although getting the codes read and understood by a competent indie is highly recommended

The owners manual should give you an idea , as should Google.

I used to be a mechanic so no problem understanding the problem if I know what it is. I agree you're probably right if nothing seems to be wrong it probably is an emissions thing.

So the only way is to get it plugged in? I'd quite like to diagnose it myself if there is some good software available.

The 'Carly' scanner seems to be £84.00 and is universal so it can do other cars apart from the Mercedes. Anyone ever tried one of those?

Better off with an icarsoft model as they do Mercedes specific readers. The generic ones can’t interrogate specific modules and get the info wrong a lot of the time

Another thing you can do is disconnect the Negative battery
terminal, wait for 15 secs and reconnect. The light should go
away.

If it comes back on again, you can go to an auto parts store and
they will scan it for free with an OBDII scanner.

I suspect you'll be on this page - the world moved your wallet may be impacted (remember v3 NOx sensor dealer wont sell you)

OP get the codes read to pinpoint at a decent indy or merc.

If you are not mechanically minded dont bother with a scanner - getting a set of codes andbeing able to diagnosed based theron are worlds apart.

Disconnecting battery is pointless, cars are too clever and not ZX spectrums. A logged fault is a failt.

Didn't have to read the codes in the end. Myself and the wife (me first, I didn't say anything to her, she noticed separately) that the car was looking low at the back.

As an ex-mechanic my spider senses started tingling. Started by taking off the wheels to check the level sensors and they were fine. Then I took off the cover which shields the pi55 tank and then finally the smaller cover which goes over the air suspension pump.

Sure enough, the outer insulation had rubbed through, the inner wire insulation also. The wire was completely broken inside. So I cut out this broken piece of wire and soldered in a new section. Heat-shrink over the joints and then fresh insulating tape. I've no reason to suspect any other cause apart from the fact the inside of the cover was touching the cable and over the years it has rubbed through. Manufacturing fault!

The light turned off by itself and I love seeing the air suspension pumping itself up after you've fixed a fault. Very little is more satisfying than seeing it getting back to the proper ride height!

there's a few issues with compressor looms rubbing (check out TIPS docs, possible you could have had it done for free under an undisclosed improvement campaign othe rmarets did correctly)....badly routed / fitted looms is becoming problematic on many brands.... I guess it stems from making too many, too fast, with insufficient training and the fact one car will have x loom and another y etc. so the idiot in the factory never gets used to doing one job correctly

yeah, it's the sort of thing which could be open to interpretation on the floor. It is held using cable ties so you could position the cable within the cable ties with varying amounts of slack within the three points where it is secured. I think the 'giveaway' for someone doing the assembly would be some resistance fitting the cover as it would be pushing on the badly routed cable.
