I’m wondering whether it’s a good idea to get a new car or keep this one. I love the car but it’s 8 years old now and I’m wondering if they are reliable or problematic as they get older?

Frankly if it's been reliable and not a fortune in repairs keep it. You cud easily just buy a headache. Even a new or near new!!!

I got rid of my last car at 8 years and 72k miles but 30k miles is not yet run in and I think I would be very tempted to keep it.

I’ve a 14 year old SLK on 133K miles without issue - keep it

Do you want another car, something you've got your eye on?

If not, apart from a £5k to £10k+ dent in your bank balance, what would the newer car give you over what you have now?

We keep our cars for about 120K miles, had 6 so far & no major issues.
I have found if its reliable it will stay reliable. Only had one problem car & its the only car I bought new.
2 years old it was gone.

30k and 8 years old is not even run in, sometimes that puts people off
because of the low mileage when it should be around 70k at least. Personally I would keep it.

Thank you for your replies to my message. Other half wants to get new car as they’re worried about costs if something does go wrong ☹️

Well that is a dilemma and very true, and you know the other half is always right, do you wanna wake up each day and she is screaming at you I told you so.

I don't involve "other" half in my car choices, I am the one under it and at the pts counter...

The Depreciation you will incur on a new car will more than pay for any problems on that one.

Maybe either put a warranty on it or put £1k away each year into a high interest account just in case.

Also the £5-10K you'll need to go from your old one to your new one will cover many many possible issues

I often wonder if I had kept my 2011 E250 cabriolet with low mileage and not having a ML350. GLE350. And now the EQC400 all in premium plus trim how much i would have in the piggy bank

Other halfs are well known for knowing lots about cars.

The cost of a newer car is more reliable than keeping the current car.......again other half logic,

We realised that it would cost us at least £17-20K extra over the value of our old car to get something similar to the age ours was when we bought it. Would it be that much of a better car? No, ours is lovely and quiet and smooth - and polishes up well. And £17K is more than we will ever spend on repairs.

You could do a thorough job detailing inc the interior, or pay someone, put some cheap personal plates on it and perhaps even have a trendy Android head unit retro fitted to give Car Play and Auto.
You could even spend a few quid on some preventative maintenance

Then treat the wife to a long weekend away or holiday and still leave many lots of money in the repair or replace fund if or when actually necessary.

Or opt for a happy life and just get a newer car of course.....
