2016 GLC - Squeaking Brakes after pad change

Hi All,

Got the Front and Rear Brakes pads done on the GLC just over a week and half ago along with a cv joint boot on the front passengers side and a bushing on the passengers side up the front. I was driving home and when i braked at normal speeds of 50-60 km per hour there is no sound. However when i slowed down and came to a stop at a traffic light i found that as i released the brake pedal there was an abrupt squeak for a second or 2. Its loud enough for people to notice also. I brought it back to the mechanic and he said he checked and re-greased all components. My wife collected the car and thought the noise was gone. Then this morning she dropped our son at at school and said the same noise is present. It only seems to occur at very low speeds when coming to a stop and as the brake pedal is released. It sounds local to the rear of the car also.

I initially thought it was suspension related due to the forward inertia of the car at a low speed coming to a stop. But as mentioned above after numerous drives and attempts to replicate the noise its only common as above upon release of the pedal when coming to a halt.

Im hoping it could be just down to a bedding in of the new pads with the rotors and will go away in a week or two. But seems odd this happens at only one particular phase of braking.


Has anyone had any experience of this?

I’d give it a few miles and let the pads bed in it maybe the lip on the outer edge of the disc from normal wear that’s causing the noise at low speed

Mine only does it in reverse. I was told that I should have put a smear of copperseal on the back of the pads. No idea if it is correct.

Hi John, I had that squeel before it went in with the reversing. Id say when it went back in again for further greasing it took care of that. This noise weirdly sounds like a suspension squeak or creak. I thought it could be the inertia of the car going forward whole coming to a stop with pressure on a suspension component. Only I found it only does it when coming to a stop going (going fwd) and then only after releasing the brake pedal. it's very odd. I'm hoping it's nothing in the brake system further forward linked to the pedal.

Update I was driving along the motorway today going on holidays and when I braked the car started pulling to the left. So ruled out tracking by driving straight and left go of the wheel while accelerating and there is no pull to the left. Repeated braking then and as suspected it pulled to the left was the brakes were applied.

From researching this it could be either the caliper seizing or else the pads themselves.
I booked it back in with the mechanic next week who didn't seem too pleased that I'm knocking on his door for a second time in 2 weeks. The car didn't go in with these problems so not sure why they are there now after routine pad replacement.

Update, after 2 days my mechanic has said he's found the issue to both problems he reckons. It's not good news for me. He found corrosion on the rear subframe on the left side localised to one of the arm attach bolting points. The attach lug has broken off. He said it's similar on the right side but not broken through yet. I don't think Iv ever heard of this happening on the glc. I know its common on the e class for sub frame. I have contacted the local main dealer who said they have contacted the warranty department to see if it's covered.

Tried searching threads but can't find anything related to the glc for this issue. Has anyone seen this before or know of any posts on this?

Not noted on a GLC but at the end of the day depends where merc are getting the poor quality steel from.

Gone are the days of mercs being well built cars.

Yeah I'm slowly learning that. Even the difference between my 2012 w212 and my x253 in build quality is like night and day. The x253 feels cheap compared to it and its the 250 spec. I'm seriously thinking of giving my mechanic the go ahead to replace this if it comes in under 1200e estimate (new frame at roughly 400 to 500) as I have read that here in Ireland the wait time for the e class subframe warranty replacements can be up to 3 months. It's my wifes car and she can't do without it.

That doesn't very good at all ....
