I've had lots of help over the years with my old 2001 W210 E240 Estate and have eventually decided to replace this with a 2016 E350 B/Tech AMG Night ED. Estate but have done as much investigation as I can and have found lots of comments about B/Tec engines. Oil overheating and lots of other related issues, engine useless after 80k etc and would be really grateful if someone could reassure me about BlueTech and direct me to some sound advice. I think the vehicle I've found must be a fleet car, done 30,000 and in great condition but no main dealer service history but presume fleet garage serviced as it looks really good and no faults. Even rang a MB main dealer to see if I could find some history but no luck but a service engineer was helpful and said it was a good machine but that BlueTech was a pain, implied that carrying the extra tank of fluid, remembering to top up etc was an issue. Not worried about adding/carrying fluid but more about the long term reliability of this engine.

Can anyone comment of direct me to good practical review and advice...thanks. The last time I posted Television (Malcolm) was still replying but sadly see that he is no longer around.

Thanks for the reply John. Malcolm was incredibly helpful over the years that I was a member since around 2002. I haven't posted since 2014 and my earlier membership seems to have disappeared, but it's not a problem.

Seriously , the 350 is a peach of an engine, assume the extra tank you mention in Adblue - so topping that up every few months? No big deal.
Enjoy the car, they’re great!

So you agree that it's a great vehicle? I've driven the 2013 version which was good but the later version looks better and the 9-speed box must be smoother. The problem is children who think I'm buying something that's killing the planet and I've defended this on the basis that it's a clean engine anyway and that the Adblue makes it about as clean as an engine can be...hope I'm correct. Any comment would be welcome...thanks

They are superb vehicles, amazing engine (I have the same in my C class).

Tell the kids it is water and fluffy bunnies that come out of the exhaust, EU6 rated so as clean as it gets.

Water & fluffy bunnies doesn't work with children approaching 30....but I've convinced myself that it is as clean as it gets. even our 18 year old E240 and 2006 diesel polo get really good test results at MOT. I guess looking after them helps too.

Thank goodness my children are too young to know! :p

Could you give me some idea of the Adblue consumption in your C class...thank you

Well just tell them it is as clean as it gets and as you are paying for it it's tough ;) It will be much cleaner than a '06 Polo diesel

Mine is EU5 so no Ad Blue

Ahhhh..... the same engine...just newer stuff to make it cleaner. That engine has been around for a long time and I think that MB have introduced a new 2.0 litre diesel which is clean and efficient but presume they may not go the whole hog for a new 3.0 litre because of the inherent difficult of making this 'clean' and powerful and high torque.

Yup, the OM642 engine has been around for years and they just continually refine it and add what is necessary to keep the emissions down

The 4 pot one is a 2.1L that has also been refined over the years

I think there is a new straight 6 3L Diesel out now that debuted in the new CLS

Name your poison really, the EU6 diesel produces 50% less CO2 than the equivalent EU6 petrol yet it produces 50% more NO2.

CO2 is less of a health hazard as it’s a natural product but is adding to global warming, nitrogen oxides are an irritant to lungs but both are emitted in much less quantity in EU6 guise so not worth deliberating over.

The main issue is does a diesel or petrol suit your motoring needs, if you do longish runs and not a lot of city driving a diesel is still the perfect tool for the job, if you need a city car the petrol or hybrid is a better choice so in a way choosing the right vehicle has become paramount in regulating emissions.

The OM642 is a very good engine testimony to the fact is that it’s been in production 13+ years.

Had mine for almost a year now and despite me always saying I dislike diesels and wanting another big V8 I am quite impressed with it.
I was told that the adblue tank is sized so that it should not need filling up between the regular service intervals (15,500 miles or annual on mine). Not sure how realistic that is as have not done too many miles in this last year due to illness.

That's much better than I thought...thanks for the information. I think the torque on this machine is pretty good and I need it for passenger load as we are regularly 5 adults on a long journey.

Thanks for this....my need is a mix really, rural journeys of an hour or so, some trips to the city but mainly I want this for the pulling power on long motorway runs with 5 up in UK & Europe and where my E240 just struggles. I haven't really found anything comparable for the used price. Have driven the BMW 535D Touring which was also pretty good but the MB is slightly wider for 3 adults in the back, also prefer the look of the MB. Looked at A6 Biturbo 320 Avant which is nice but £10k more and I still prefer the look of the MB. Also not fussed about all the bells and whistles of a higher spec vehicle and although this is pretty much a base model it's well equipped for my needs, not interested in anything too flash until I can afford an E63S.....a long wait I fear.

It might not bother you but the Bluetec doesn’t have a spare wheel, the ADBLUE tank now occupies that space and as you mentioned long distance travel you may want to either carry a spare with you or fit runflats. The prefacelift 212 does have a spare but is EU5
