Hi everyone, I’ve put a reserve down for a 2017 C220d Estate with 78k miles. It’s only had a A and B service and the garage I’m looking to buy the car from has just carried out their own service. I’m not sure on the mileage on the A and B service. But the garage has just carried out their own at 78k. The car looks itself looks in very good condition and it’s only had 1 private owner since new. I’m just concerned about the service history, it’s average around 19.5k miles a year the car. With only 3 services in the 78k. Any experience or guidance that could be passed on to me before I go and see the car on Saturday would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome,

It should have been serviced every 15k or annually (whichever comes first). So 3 services in 78k miles isn’t sufficient… 5 services would have been correct, 15, 30, 45, 60 & 75

As above.
If you are set on the car, look to negotiate on the price due to an incomplete service history.
Its worth less on resale whether you own it now or are buying it.

Thanks for the replies. Should I be worried regarding the missed services? I know it’s hard to say without knowing external factors. How the car has been driven, motorway miles etc. I’ve never owned a Merc before so want to be confident and have peace of mind in buying the right one.

I would be surprised such a relatively new car has an incomplete / missed service.

Could it be the paperwork itself is incomplete.

At that mileage I can only assume motorway miles, a salesperson perhaps.

If the car spec is very rare and what you are after haggle the price right down and get the car serviced early next time and find a good indy.

If its a bog standard model, then another one will come along shortly

Unless they could show me a good service history I wouldn't touch it, too much of a risk.
Plenty of other ones out there.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated. Doesn’t make sense that the previous owner bought the car from new and then only serviced the car twice, up to 78k miles. Surely that would of affected manufactures warranty etc. I’m going to go and see the car on Saturday, but I’m going to be very cautious. Thanks again.

No idea on your budget but these are a few 2016-18 diesel C Class estates on sale at the dealers.

My budget is 20k. The one I’ve seen is the C220d premium plus and looks really smart.

Always worth remembering that the MB dealers have the best cars (ie without issues) but the trade generally end up with the best specced cars which is the lure
MB Aren't always more expensive either... my SLK came from a main dealer even though it was probably outside their normal stock (bit too old) - I tested another from a VW garage that was older, more miles and more expensive... Search long and wide :)

The lack of a full service wouldn't necessarily put me off .... turning it round, a car with a full service history might not be without its problems.

Mileage and lack of servicing a big worry... add in that it's been fitted with the cheapest "non-brand" tyres and you get an ide of how it's been looked after. I'd not even have bothered to view it.

Re discs they always get surface rust when a car is washed more than driven while at the sales lot. Condition can only be judged once polished up after a few miles and by measuring thickness. Calipers look a bit dull but then they will with 80k of brake dust and road grime corrosion.... they might clean up a bit more before you lose the Mercedes writing.

Check it has two keys as mostly sellers have both together and there's only one. The cheap card tag on the key looks tatty... wonder why?

Yep over-miles... over priced... under maintained... not a great combo.
