I'm guessing the maps in my Comand are original to its 2012 build. Wondering about getting the final 2019 update. These would just be for a backup as I use Google maps on the iPhone all the time as a main choice.

I wondered if there is any improvement to the maps for this last update over and above the road/route updates. I mean as in the fact my current maps look like a spider on a blackboard... no detail at all... any improvement in this area? I'm thinking 3D... some land features etc.

I have checked and my unit software is the latest for the NG 2.5 so it would support this map version.

no one ever got back to me re is there bird's eye view on the NTG2.5 (aka 3D mapping view). Note the maps aren't usually the driver of 3D mapping its the units firmware and brain power

If it has this then I'd stick the later maps on, as in car is way better than phones and the law changes in 25 days to locked up and shot, if you so much as notice the phone is in the car.

if its just the nasty 2d flat joke of the earlier units where zooming in and out is 3 specific button presses of wobble all over the road nearly crashing then try something else

Or maybe there is a kind forum member near you with the disk who wouldnt mind you visiting and updating the unit.

Good point re the law changes above.

I upgraded min a last year.

You can change what is shown the map, petrol stations, shops, banks, mercedes dealers and more by going into the settings.

As for me there has been alot of changes to the roads since 2012, so I would be upgrading.

Thanks. Despite no-one confirming you see fields of cows in real time after the update I think I’ll do it... and by one of the economical ways. But as I said just as a backup to Google maps on the phone.

I have no fear of using the phone for this use. In a cradle on a power lead and fitted to the central upper dash not taking out any windscreen view. Also only use voice commands to navigate or text... I don’t engage with voice calls on the move.

the law change is not allowed to touch your phone at all from 2022 - so no use of google spyware when the vehicle is moving if you need to interact to recheck anything, no changing music tracks etc.

6 points and 200 quid... and now no ambiguity - "I wasn't transmitting or receiving data, so go away little man" - its now, you touch it, get out I'm taking you to the firing squad

Which is stupid & virtually unenforceable. There are plenty of things already in a car to distract you. What's the difference between touching a touch screen radio/sat-nav & a phone?

Yep it's all daft because just two inches from my phone position are the heater rear window and rear wiper buttons which I assume I'm still allowed to operate.

Like Emily's Dad I do it all by voice and my phone isn't touched on a run after I place in the cradle at the start... Siri is my friend.

it was unenforceable - as they'd have needed to contact your phone network supplier and take the phone for prolonged, protracted and difficult analysis - that was the issue

now very easy - on camera you are touching the phone, most plod have body cams these days and most now have a camera pointing at the traffic on motorways, they won't even have to stop you... just a clip of you touching it and 6 points - and they were trialing 2 plus years ago, side of the road stuff

The law has been strengthened to allow police to “more easily prosecute drivers using a hand-held mobile phone at the wheel”. It is already illegal to make calls or send texts while driving, but these new measures will criminalise use of a mobile phone “while driving under virtually any circumstance”

They'd never see me touching my phone as it sits down by the gear selector on the 129/240 and the forward cubby box of the three in the 251.

It's moot anyway as I don't need to use it when driving.

When you are driving its always apparnt when someone infront is being distracted (mostly using a phone). I had seen it three times yesterday (Nottingham to Koln), sudden changes in speed, lane veering and seeming totally oblivous; only overtaking the fools you see them glued to the phone.

An Audi driver had the phone in his face and was facetiming in Belgium!!!!

Throw the book at them.

We have all done it in the past and know how potentially dangerous it can be.

Would the NTG 4.0 give better graphics / other advantages?

As I have 2.5 in the SLK and 4 in the S204, I would imagine that changing his Viano to NTG4 would be difficult and expensive. For a start, 2.5 controller is on the dash, 4 controller is a twist and click knob behind the gear stick!

They’ll do it with cameras :( as there’s almost zero traffic police on the roads these days (although I did see a dark blue Audi A3 on the M6 southbound in Cumbria on Friday. They’d stopped someone on the hard shoulder which is very rare these days unless it’s a T-pac for drug offences etc)

I saw at least 5 cars where the owner was very obviously looking at and interacting with their phone screens.

I do think the huge touch screen displays in modern cars are as bad but they’re not in the firing line at the moment.

I’ve not checked but does it now prevent the police from pressing transmit on their shoulder mounted radios when making a call whilst driving?

I took the NTG 4 from my 2014 Viano (at least I think it is) when I bought it. That has the verbaltronics lever to the right behind the wheel. That lever works well as my garage door opener now.

I didn't use it in practice so have little knowledge of functionality. So aside from the larger internal storage I wondered if it was superior in other ways.
