The earth connection needs to be really really good, you need good shiney metal both ends and a good jump lead with strong connections. It could still be a bad earth

Auto inhibitor circuit or gear selector

Its a Bad Earth somewhere, It will always try to click the solenoid and in some cases shunt the starter for a split second.

When it occures, you can see the positive earth on the earth of the K8 starter relay.

If it was the Auto inhibitor circuit, then you would not get anything ata all including a positive earth.

But surely the Auto Inhibitor circuit is just a simple switch on the gearbox selector. The main stuff is the Drive Authorisation System normally located behind the cluster..

Did you cure this fault

I have a C220 CDI with the exact same fault, and done what you your self have done with batteries earths etc.

Did you ever fix the fault and what was it in the end, any help would be great

Update on my problem...

My ML270 would start from cold without an issue, but after a run would not re-start.

Eventually the problem was located to the Electroplate in the Auto Gearbox. The temp sensor fault was stoping the car from starting. After replacement all is well, although £500 less off..

Hi, I would just like to say hello to everyone. I have done nearly 100k miles in my car without the need for this forum it has been so good. I think the starter needs replacing and am just after tips if I need to check anything else. The battery is in good health and the car does start if bumped. I have cjecked fuse number 54 and it is still the original 15 amp but it has not blown. I tried it again incase the fuse had become dislodged slightly but still nothing. The only thing that worries me slightly is that I don't hear any kind of clicking which I thought I would? Also I did put it in gear and rock it to make sure it wasn't stuck (the car is a manual). Many thanks in advance of any advise :)

Hi I have a 2012 c220 cdi, for the past 6 months, it has intermittently failed to start, the key goes in (depress clutch and coil goes out) turn the key and absolutely nothing. Sometimes after three or four attempts it decides to fire up. On other occasions i have had to leave the car (even arranged for a tow) but seems to be after the car is left for a few hours, i go back to it and it fires up. I have just had the steering lock replaced as it seemed to be a common fault.
NOTHING is showing up on the diagnostics machine at a mercedes specialist. I was hoping the steering lock would fix it, but happened again to me yesterday. Anyone who has any ideas, please get in contact!!
Thanks in advance

Sorry to add to an old thread... Had the same issues, with the starter not cranking. Checked the fusebox and removed and replaced all of the fuses and connectors listed. Bingo, fired up first time.

Cheers.

Click, no crank as well now. Was able to start it after waggling floor shifter in "P" for a short while before but not any more.

Changed starter, Confirmed TCM dry, changed electroplate and checked solonoids within Ohms limits, and also changed the floor shifter and shift rod bushings. (haven't adjusted shift rod yet, that's next when I find instructions). Checked every fuse in SAM, cleaned all earth points and battery terminals, charged battery despite being a new one 3 mths ago, measured ohms/Volts in all SAM relays, checked ECU connectors not corroded and are tight. Absoloutly everything mentioned on this thread checked but still click no crank.

Been out of service for over a month now and I'm loosing the will to live tbh.
Considering either getting it transported to local main dealers to see what they come up with (after selling a kidney to fund it) or finding a mobile S/E merc specialist to come out to it and see if they can work a miracle and resurect the dead.

Getting 12V to starter, basic check done ages ago, but thanks for the suggestion bembo449.
Found a guy, friend of a friend, with Star who will come over some time when he is free. Hope he diagnoses and gets me going!

Solved.

New engine and gearbox earth straps.
Also cleaned as many of the earth points I could find.

Runs a treat now.

Thank you everyone who helped.
