210 key probs

hello everyone,the electronic key on my 1998 e 280 (210) suddenly stopped working this morning,i started the car as normal this morning and stopped at a shop on the way to work,when i tried to unlock the car to get back in it would not unlock..imanaged to get my spare key brought out to me and that works fine,the old key will not start the car..i have just replaced the batteries this morning but still no joy(the light flashes on the key and it is sending a signal(checked with digi-camera test).....does the key have to be re-set somehow or has anyone got any idea's?...thanks

thanks for advice but my key is the newer version(das type) so i do not have the mirror with the lights on

checked with camera and it is sending a signal so it looks like the key itself has somehow lost the code for the vehicle so unless it can be re-set it looks like a new key...does anyone know how much the stealer will charge for the key?(please try and break it to me gently!)
