My car needs the O/S/F ball joint that is marked on the picture below (but, I'll do both sides anyway).

Does anyone know, if this ball joint is part of a bigger item that can be purchased and easily bolted on or, if it is available as a pressed in ball joint only? Also any specialist stuff required to do this or should I trust my local MOT station to perform the repair?

Just a lower arm ball joint needed, easy enough to do however can’t say what your garage is like.

This is a local place I use for MOTs, never had any of mine fail until today! They showed me the problem whilst I was there and marked the part (as they know I tinker and get my own stuff etc). But, I haven't got time to DIY.

@star - thanks for that, I get a couple Lemforder items ordered up!

Just fit Lemforder as anything else I usually try has been very short lived in comparison.

We have seen aftermarket ball joints that are fractionally bigger and stretch the carrier. This makes them harder to fit and when fitting a replacement oe part, it’s too loose. Not saying that this a problem with lemforder as we have never used them.

Local MOT place did the ball joints. (I always replace stuff like this in pairs). Approximately 1 hour per side as I thought. Its was the Lemforder parts I supplied they fitted, thanks again to @star for confirming the part. The garage stated that there were no issues with the fitment.

Just bringing this up again. I do not have a parts diagram and due to personal issues, I have had zero time for about a year and all of next year to work on cars.

The car went to MercServe yesterday for a few bits and as I drove it there, I noticed it was creaking, more like the whole thing was about to snap in half. Picture the incredible hulk bending and snapping the car in half! This creaking they said was down to the lower ball joint, the one that goes into the hub, it presses in and is an easy job. Is this either of the ball joints pictured on post #4? If someone can confirm if either or, both of the ball joints pictured above would be the ones that MercServce were referring to, I'd be grateful as its not something I'm willing to leave until the new year due to safety and the fact I handed the CLS down to my mother who also carts my daughter around in it. The reason I couldn't just leave it to them is that due to other circumstances it wouldn't be possible to book in until into mid Jan 2023.

They also advised a rear spring that needs doing. I'm shocked at how this severe creaking has just appeared and the spring was not picked up at the last MOT. I've ordered a set of Eibach replacement line springs for it, hopefully if someone can confirm the ball joints I can get the right ones ordered up and get TWR racing, who I've used for 20 years to fit them.

Yes these are the lower ball joints , did both mine with Lemforder as a diy job . These are the only ones that press in to the hub . Yes they make a racket , or at least mine did .
The other two ball joints in the picture are part of a control arm and the outer tie rod .

Thank you Wighty!

Both of the lemforder ball joints pictured in post 4 have been ordered for both sides for good measure.

The one you pictured is also the one the MOT garage replaced so absolutely dumbfounded as to how it could be shot so quickly.

Eibach springs arrived just as I was setting off.

Car dropped off and then got a call stating other joints had splits so I told TWR to go all out with new arms etc and get it sorted. I can see this CLS is going to cost me a small fortune in repairs with my mother at the wheel!

Main reason why I sold my w219. Far too many suspension joints .

I agree it’s very busy in the arms and joints department without reason.

My concern is why MercServ didn’t report this considering the car has not been driven in between this period. It can only be that they did not inspect it thoroughly enough. Had they done so, I could have got the parts of my choice and for the sake of it done all shocks and springs, all the rear joints/arms etc for the sake of the effort.

The car was done by the evening, along with a few other bits and only leaves to be aligned this morning at one of our trusted places. At least this gets the car safe to drive again and these items should not be an issue at MOT time in a couple of months.
