Can anyone please advise of a solution. The rear right rear seat back (the 20% one without the guard and cover) is jammed in the upright position. Up to now it has always worked fine but suddenly its jammed and of course that also prevents the left/centre backs from being lowered due to the attached cover. The release lever seems to be ok and the red warning centre pops up but the back remains firmly latched in place. I've tried pulling pushing heaving to the point of brute force but the thing seems firmly stuck. Can anyone help please?

Sorry - I can't help you here other than to bump your thread.

What model 220 CDI is it? A C class maybe?

Can you hear the catch releasing when you pull on the lever? If you can, this indicates that the spigot is freeing from the catch and I suggest that you get somebody to hold the lever in the open position while you try to pull the spigot out of the catch, i.e. pull on the seat.

Other than that, don't know what you can do!

Thnx for the info ernieh.I think its a similar prob to the stuff gibsones135 referenced me to since it does not feel (or sound) like anything happens when you pull the release. There is just the resistance of the spring loaded mechanism without ant apparent moving of the locking device.

The only answer that I know is to prise away the bottom corner of the back rest on the inside corner, then the catch can be released and the cable repaired

Is it still covered by the MB 3 year warranty?
If yes, take it to MB,if not ask MB for a Goodwill contribution towards making good as it should not have failed in so short a period of time.

Apparently a common fault and a nightmare to sort out. The drivers side one (smaller seat) on my failed just before the warranty expired. I seem to remember it was 2-3 hours labour plus the new mechanism. Luckily they managed to dismantle the seat without destroying any of the trim. If it's not covered by the warrantly it's probably best to find an indie who's familiar with fixing this fault or as jp williams suggests ask MB for a goodwill contribution as this is a known fault. You would have thought that they would have come up with an improved design by now.

Releasing Rear Seat

Further to earlier posts, I had a look at my rear seat this morning, although it should be noted that this is a saloon (204) rather than estate and is similar to what was on my previous car, a 203 Saloon. In the case of the saloon, the spigot, i.e. the fixed part, is on the back of the seat and the catch mechanism is fixed to the rear bulkhead crossmember.

Unfortunately, I can't check the estate, but on mine, there is an inspection hole, presumably to help when installing a new cable, where it is possible to insert a screw-driver and pull back on the mechanism thus releasing the seat. With the seat in the upright position, access is very awkward but not impossible and might be worth trying, but will depend on the layout on the estate and if the inspection hole is accessible.

Sorry if this has already been explored by someone who knows better, but I thought it might be worth having a look at. Hope you get it sorted, though, at not-too-great a cost!

Regards,

Ernie

On the estate the catch mechanism is incorporated into the back of the seat. MB replaced the complete unit on mine so I'm not sure whether it's possible to just replace the cable.
