Hi,
Having a bit of bother with my '94 220 CE. It misfires and then stalls when the engine is idling in traffic after a long journey. Had the car in to a Mercedes tech who has changed plugs, engine coil and Air Mass flow meter but this has not fixed the problem at all. I'm starting to get a little frustrated (but less so than my father who just broke down on M25 in the car):( does anyone have any experience of this problem on this type of engine?

looking at your post you say changed plugs engine coil and Air Mass flow meter.

Do you mean engine oil or do you mean coil (or even coils, as there are two on the E220) ?

Did tech read the fault codes and inform you of the result ?

When car broke down on the motorway, did it restart again almost immediately ?

I have experience of this range of cars and you are local and I wanted to e-mail you, but cannot.

E-mail me if you want and I will respond.

Update to this problem - it turned out to be the plug lead to no. 2 cylinder that was causing the misfire. I've now had all 4 leads replaced and the car runs just fine. My sincere thanks to David Williams from this forum who identified the problem and saved me spending £1000 on a new ECU, which I had been told to do by two Mercedes specialists.

Thanks for the acknowledgement.

If any other forum member wants their early to mid 1990s car looked at/serviced/repaired, then have time on my hands at present due to credit crunch affecting the mortgage market.

Worked on cars all my life and over last 5/6 years done all my own work on 124 320 coupe.

Just replaced rear subframe bushes for another forum member with 124 saloon, using special tool that I invested in. He had a distinct intermittent rear end wobble, and no one could really tell him what the problem was.

Have special Klann compressor for suspension springs, along with selection of various thicknesses of spring pads, so if any 124 owner wants to experiment with effect of changing to thinner pad etc, I can do that.

Also, another known 124 problem is worn rear diff bushes and are very tricky without special tool, so have also invested in that.

Can read fault codes on the HFM cars also.

In exchange for getting down and dirty I expect to be reward with beer money of £20 for every hour spent on the job, and will always agree a fixed cost in advance, even if job takes me longer.

Do everything by the (Mercedes) manual and love investigating chassis/alignment/tracking
problems in general and have a good understanding in that area.
