Can someone please confirm the locking pump is under the back seat in the 1984 230e. The problem I have is losing vaccuum after switching off, works perfectly while running. Is there a reservoir and where to find such a beast? And finally how do I get under the back seat? Appreciate any wisdom!.

Birkenhead.
The haynes manuals will give you chapter and verse on this if you're into the DIY.

The vacuum pump is under the back seat on W124s as far as I know. Buggered if I know how it works the central locking though.

1984, wouldn't that be a w123? It all runs off the engine. Looking at the car from the front, there's a splitter at the back of the engine bay on the left hand side, which has about 5 or 6 plastic lines coming off it. There's also a reservoir, but I can't remember where it is on a 123, I know it's behind the front wing on a 114.

What do you mean by losing pressure after switching off?

Why would you want pressure after switching off, doesnt the pump just run when required like on the later models?

Resevoir

I think the resevoir is behind the rear bumper on W123's. It looks like a big egg box.

it's underneath the parcel shelf

Open the bootlid and look up :)

That's unlikely to be the root of the problem, you will probably find one of the seals on the circuit has gone.

There is no quick or easy fix other than checking each and every one but you can sometimes narrow it down if one is slower to open or lock when the engine is running.

the 123 has no pump like the 124 under the back seat. The system relies totally on vacuum stored straight from the engine. As the previuos post says its simply trial and error to find the leak. Most common is the door locking elements seals gone though

Many thanks to everyone who offered words of wisdom. By the way, what is a W123? Will be able to start the search as soon as I get back to the mighty machine.

I've recently bought a 1984 230te. When I got it the locks all closed and all but the front passenger door opened. Now none work.

Will blocking off pipes a door at a time help me find the problem and where is the resevoir on the te?
