Diff has whined quietly around 50-60 mph since I bought the car in Jan (auction flutter!). 5k miles later this has gradually increased and is now a bit louder, though still not bad. I changed the oil for diff about 2k miles ago. Two questions: 1) Should I do anything about this - is it urgent!? 2) Does anyone know a specialist who can fix (preferably local to Worcestershire), and what sort of money are we talking about?

Also does anyone know a good mechanic in Worcestershire for any other work I might need - I don't want to use just my local garage.

Diffs are a specialist job, more so with MB as the whole thing has to be dismantled, it used to be the norm to take the pinion nose off and replace the bearing.

If you leave it it could destroy the crown wheel and that would mean a new diff as the noise may never go away.

As for who you get, you need someone who has been around a long time, ask your local garage who they use.
