Hi all

I need help on the above issue as my auto 230te only seems to give me 24mpg/300 miles tank range!
Is this normal? Also when it hits reserve it only wants another 40ish ltrs more to fill up, but I thought this car had a 9ltr reserve and a 72ltr tank.

If any of this makes sense please help

p.s. I almost always drive in E, and am light on the throttle.

Thanks all

Paul

Hi,

You don't mention how old the vehicle is. If up to 88, whether 123 or 124 then 24 is about average. After 89 then you should be able to get a little more. But not a great deal. You will probably find even on a run it will return 24mpg. But the later vehicles depending on how its driven will return closer to 27mpg on a run, some of my customers have told me they will get 30. The earlier engines seem in my experience just don't last as long. Ie the piston rings wear out and although its running ok'ish. Always starts. The fact is a lot of the mixture is ending up in the sump.

I know after I told you all this you will say its a 92 vehicle or one of the later vehicles. But the above is a generalisation. You will find the LATER 300e's will give 24mpg no problem at all.

As for the amount of fuel in the tank. Well it depends on if you have a larger fuel tank than normal, which could be ordered from the factory at build time.

Andy @ www.mercedesservicing.com

ps, I know some of you out there will be getting better than the figures above!!!!!

Sorry

I forgot to mention its a 1989 model 124.
Is the standard tank size 72ltrs or do you think mine could be smaller?

i have a 1991 260e that does about 20mpg around town and 25 mpg on a run(300 miles to a tank) I think the tank capacity is 60  litres, and the reserve comes on when 10 are left.

Veering off the point a bit here, but i used to own a 1994 Rover 2.7 Sterling auto (sad i know)......so i share in your shock and disgust at the fuel consumption of certain cars!

Badshot ,

This is a subject close to my heart as I also have an 89 230TE auto the same as you . Unfortunatly yes , 24 MPG is about the norm . My usual 3 miles each way trip to work and back can give me as little as 16 MPG , only going 50 miles for £10 of petrol , but on longer runs if I'm carfull and 'whaft' as much as possible I can get 28 MPG at the very most . I've even just had it serviced with new air filter & plugs and I mention the 'poor' MPG , but it hasn't made any difference . This is just one of the joys of an older 2.3 litre engine dragging around a heavy estate car.

Mike .

300 miles from a tank would be a nice change to be honest!!!!

250 is about the limit on my 190...even on a constant run, such as the trip to the Cotswolds.

Someone should publish a table of the fuel comsumptions of all MB models....hmm, i may even have a go tonight at home!!!

Hi

Matt, If you had a cylinder leakage test carried out. I bet the results whould should 40% at least loss. That 40% of the power going into the sump. I would suspect that this is where the fuel consumption test.

Mike did the guy who carried out the service. Check & adjust the emissions? All these things will have a considerable effect on fuel consumption.

Andy.

Im going to have to look into that i think, thanks for letting me know.

One thing though, im sure a read somewhere that 190's came with 2 different size petrol tanks, if thats the case, i have definatly got the small tank as i can barely squeeze 50 litres in there.

I doubt this will cheer you up but I have a c36 and have found that my average fuel return is about 22mpg, I drive mostly through town with a short run (24miles each way) twice a week.

On a holiday run to Spain, 4 adults in the car with lots of handbag luggage! and returned 32 mpg cruising at about 80 (wherever possible) and using regular roads + dual carraigeway down through France and across northern Spain.

I don't drive excessively, but do enjoy the power occasionally.  Since I have fitted a couple of Ecotecs I have seen an improvement to 24mpg for my usual cycle but I have been driving a little harder as well.  This fitment may help your economy.

Good news I just had her serviced and the guy changed the air filter which he said was the wrong one (last service local merc stealership).
It has returned 33mpg on a run down to the coast at 70-75mph, I'm pretty happy with this as its an old big heavy car.
Anybody with the same motor had any better out of theirs.

Cheers
