Hi
I've had a '92 230te auto non aircon for about a month now and noticed the temp gauge, which normally sits around the 80 creep up when i'm stuck in traffic to 100+ and then return to the normal 80 once on the move again. The fan is just running very slowly at this this raised temp.
Have seen the carrot test mentioned here but it seemd pointless as it wouldn't chop soft butter let alone a carrot
I needed the aboved fixed urgently as I was going to use the car to do a 450mile round trip tomorrow so booked it into a merc specialist for the fan coupling replacement. They have subsequently told me its not the viscous coupling but a faulty switch/solenoid causing the problem ie if bypassed fan works perfectly.
So if anyone else has such problems its worth checking the above too. I have no idea where said switch/solenoid is (near thermostat ?) but will check when i pick the car up on Saturday (no part avail til tomorrow)
I now will be making the journey in a 1.2clio (uni visit to Durham) which wont be fun albeit cheaper on fuel
