I have a 1985 240TD (passed down to me by my father and have just acquired 3 months ago) that I drive on a regular basis. In last week or so I've been adding brake fluid every other day. This problem have compounded to having the clutch not returning to its normal position after stepping on it during bumper to bumper traffic. To correct this I would turn the ignition off and bring back the clutch pedal to its normal position and restart the engine. Today when I tried starting my car the clutch pedal goes all the way down and does not come back. I checked the brake fluid level and it was at 30%. I added brake fluid to the brim to see if there would be any change but it was still the same.

I would appreciate any help/advise on this problem. Thanks.

Its one of two things, either the clutch master cylinder is faulty or the slave on the bell housing. As its leaking you should be able to see which one it is.both are straight forward to replace, once you could buy overhaul kits,do not know today.

Got to agree, symptoms make the master slightly more likely than the slave (as that's nearest the pedal end). If you are topping up the fuild, it must be going somewhere though. Can you get someone to sit in the car and pump away at the pedal , whilst you look for leaks at both ends ? Also have look at the flexi hose as a possible third culprit

Can I just add to your good points that if the master cylinder is bolted directly to the bulk head, the lost fluid could run under the carpet on the inside of the car.

It would run down the inside of the bulkhead. It is highly corrosive and it sounds like there's a lot of it about. Lots of hot soappy water. Hope that it is the slave cylinder but you would have noticed oily spots on the road/drive.
