Hi all,

I am putting together a new set of winter wheels (keen I know..)
I'm using OEM 17" wheels from another C-class.
The rear wheels, with 'correct' corresponding tyres are 245/40/17. This size however isn't all that common, few manufactures do any winter tyres in this size, and quite expensive a corner.
In 245/45/17 however there is much more variety and are cheaper.

What are people's thoughts on the increase in profile from 40 to 45? I think if my calc's are correct this would mean an increase in tyre diameter of 9mm?
Is this likely to cause any fouling or ESP/ABS issues?

The front profile will stay the same.

Cheers!

That will be just fine and I do the same thing, the difference is only the same as between used or worn tyres. You could go down 1 on the width say 235 x 45.

Would the decrease in width to '235' cause the tyre to look/be 'stretched'?

On a 8½" rim no, 8½" is 215mm, so lots spare.

I have spoken to Mercedes for winter tyre advice just last year and the general rule of thumb is to take slightly more skinny and sometimes taller tyres than your regular tyre. This is so it cuts through the snow more easily and you've a better chance of getting away from a standing start as of course a big fat tyre will hug the ground when your stopped.. So for me based on what you have described 235/45/17 would be the way to go. Will you be using a studded tyre or not?

The diameter would increase by 24.5mm...10% of 245mm (an inch in old money).

I'd definitely be inclined to go narrower and taller rather than keeping the width the same.

I wouldn't be running studded tyres no, just winter tread/compounds M&S.

So if the diameter increases best part of an inch going from 40 to 45 profile that sounds like I'm going to be suffering from rubbing then as that is quite an increase!?

Does anyone know of any good tyre/wheel size calculation websites?

:)
