I need a new system inc cat. Leaking in 3 places!
Local MB are about £1200 & local exhaust centre £500.
I have heard non original systems are noisey - how noisy? - as I am not in the heavy footed set!!!
Advice on the best way out of this one appreciated

IMHO, if you are keeping it put on a MB exhaust, if selling it's up to you.

simple answer

If the funds are limited, and it has not gone on the cat take it off, very simple indeed, if you back onto some car ramps.

Get some bendable sheet steel wrap arround the holes, circle the exhaust and weld up, with a mig type welder.

Or if you havent got one take off it comes in two bits, the front never seems to go, near the heat and get someone to do for you, just done mine, sprayed it with a tin of high temp paint 2000 degs, and it is like new !

The alternative is get ripped off for a new one !

I was pleased to find a previous owner had fitted a Powerflow stainless steel system to my C250TD. I therefore have no idea what the standard system sounded like but when cruising my car is quiet. When I press the loud pedal though it does give out quite a roar.

I have no idea of the cost as the invoice for the exhaust was not in with the service history. I did look on the powerflow site though and it looks like they like to quote for peoples cars on an individual basis as they claim to make the exhausts from scratch. Sorry I cannot help more.
