Hi I have a W124 250TD('91) manual that is jumping out of 5th gear..it started by just gently dis-engaging when I dropped off the revs and today it got worse and will clunk itself out after a few seconds of being in. All the other gears work fine and there are no strange noises. Are there any non-gearbox-out solutions to this kins of thing? Am i doomed to gamble on a re con? Do any other models or vans share this box? Sorry for so many Q's.. Thanks ß:)

Hello and welcome, I missed read your post and thought it was auto, so I have edited it. Gears only drop out when they are worn, that is the gear is worn so that it is pushed out. It will be a rebuild.

How are your engine mountings? Any movement on deceleration over and above normal could cause unwanted movement in the linkage. Also, how are your linkages looking?

I miss read that one, thank you so much, and I have marked it accordingly.

Gears drop out when they are worn, that is the gears have worn on the teeth so that they are pushed out by the angle of the teeth.

It is a rebuild.

Thank you David. malcolm

Wow.. Thanks guys.. I reckon that the mountings and linkages are ok so reckon its a re build then or would I just be able to replace the 5th gear?.. what is the model of the gearbox that the 250td uses? Can I get one from.. a van or other model of car (petrol/diesel etc 190/300???). Thanks very much for your time

Hello again, there is a mod that can be done to your box, it is as I said earlier that the gear has to be replaced along with a modified shaft and a wider gear. the thrust plate is no longer used to compensate.

Go to a gear box specialist and have it done,a second hand one will go the same way.

It you find someone to do it,I will let you have the mod.

If the box has to come out,you might as well do a complete overhaul and replace the clutch at the same time. No point taking it out a second time a bit further down the line!

Just check that the rubbers on the gear selector levers on the box end of the selector rods are not shot. If the hole (in the rubber) is ovalised then the gear might not be selecting completely and might jump as a consequence.

Excellent advice there. It is a bit more tricky to do these things from France but worth it I am sure.. Thanks again..and I will contact you when I can afford to get it done.
Warm Regards
