Hello from Glasgow

Just got my first merc, a 1987 260E. A couple of question I hope you guys can help me with. The two rear windows do not work and the seller informed me that they were never used, do I look at the child switch first, is there a seperate fuse for the rears or do I tackle the motors? In need of a ciggie lighter too, do I need to go to a merc dealer for one? There is no radio fitted so I plan to fit one, there are two speakers in the dash or I presume there is and also where shall I mount the aerial? Car runs like a dream and I love it already and it's only done 90k miles so if you guys can point me in the right direction.

thanks

The windows are fused diagnally, not front to rear. It is probably the regulators that siezed through lack of use.

Put the ignition on and the interior light, then press onbe of the working windows and wacthc the light to see how it dims when you pres the switch, then press one of the rear switches and see if it still dims. If it does, then there is power getting to the motor and as I mentioned before, the rgulator or motor have siezed. If it does not dim then it is an electrical fault.

You can buy a cigarette lighter from anywhere, it doesn't need to be a genuine MB one.

The aerial is normally mounted on the near side rear wing. Make sure you buy one with a high angle fitment because it is an estate.

another very common failure on the rear windows is the wiring that passes through the door pillar to the doors.

with the door open pull the rubber grommet back and check for any breakages/fraying just twisting the wires around may well get the windows to work.

You may find it's as simple as replacing a bit of wiring - seems this is a real weakness, both of my mercs have suffered from this problem and I know of several others

Hi

The lighters/watches are ready available on eBay. I got a nice watch and a zippo style lighter for under a £10 :D I think your windows will be seized through lack of use. You can also pick up spares through eBay. The postage can be heavy as I live in Cumnock and everything I want is in London :(

Yip inside the cog and drive from the motor have siezed up, oh what fun I had stripping it down.

Putting one of them back together now but tis going dark rather quick so after having a torch under my chin and trying to manouver the wires onto the cog and plenty swearing I have given up for the night.

By chance does anyone have a link to a webpage to show a diagram of the wires or shall I fork out for a Hayes manual?

Still enjoying my old new merc
Cheers Stuart

There is a company that advertises in the Yellow Paper or Scottish Adtrader MERC PARTS I think he is based in Stewarton/ surrounding area. I don't have his number but it could be worth buying todays yellow paper to get it. Let me know how you get on as there is some bits I'm needing too.
