So,
Who falls foul of Gordons latest dive into our pockets.
Anyone know what the co2 emissions of an E270 are?

It should tell you on your registration document

I got it a tad wrong - apparently its not 280 but 225 g/km
So, my E270 is Band E at 180 g/km and the Jeep, despite being a smaller engine is 2 bands higher at the new G at 250g/km

Amusingly my eco-disaster heavy but fast beastie is in the same bracket as massive polluters like the Toyota Avensis 1.8!! So, I'm green after all!!

Its all rather sad really. Like an extra pound a week is going to convince anyone to ditch their 4x4. We already pay more by using more fuel and tyres. If I can afford to run the damn thing I can sure as hell afford the extra road tax!

Yes thats true, if you can afford to purchase the car you should be able to run it, BUT thats not the point, i feel that ever since ive been driving all i have seen is anything to do with a car nearly tripple in cost due to the goverments lack of funds.
This is not excusable as we also pay tax on everything we consume and at a wopping 17.5%. You go over to the states and its nil tax on foods and only 8% on clothing (depending where you go). So why do we pay double? and in most countries around the world none of them pay so much towards Taxes.....

Ah - we're drifting into politics. I suspect there are few Labour fans on an MB forum!!!
Still Gordons going to PM soon. Personally I think he'll make a crap PM and we'll end up with Cameron before too long, but it will take so long to sort out the mess left from Gordons short term fixes, we're stuck with mad taxes for a long while yet.

Still on the upside - when the banking sector hit the wall, I indirectly moved into Gordon's booming public sector so technically you're paying for my Merc!
Thanks guys!!!

... I suppose we shouldn't lose site of the issue of the environment as the world is presently heading down the environmental toilet.

Whatever people may feel motivates the gov't to tax fuel, the fact is there is some justification to try and force us to consume less petrol (and diesel), however unpalatable that truth may be.

Bingo!

280g/km. Do I get a prize?

Well you're better than the following;

290 M3 (surprised me)
293 C55
299 E55 (old one)
350 RS6
366 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8
378 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
499 Ferrari 575 Maranello

hmmmm. 288 for mine...

Slinky,

You definitely get the prize as

(a) you have the highest number
(b) Jim and I have bought second hand which is form of recycling and which is therefore GREEN
(b) your emissions are for a two seater (not 5) so pollution per seat is twice that of a Porsche Cayenne Turbo
:) :)

My SLK's at 225.....is that bad????? Mind you, after a C3 at £85 for the year.......anything's bad really...!!! :(

Thought I was being green by changing to a 2 seater and not having 3 empty seats in the car....guess I was wrong!!! Personally I think I pay enough tax already on the £70 worth of fuel I get through each week travelling to and from work....but hey ho....can't have everything in life I suppose.

Now, lets not let reality get in the way of a good rant!!
Yes it's true. However, I seem to remember hearing that the carbon emmissions of a batch of volvos over their entire lives were less than the emmissions of the ship that brought them here for that one journey. So perhaps, in normal politician style, they are fidling with the small percentages whilst the bulk goes unchecked. bottom line, how many 4x4's, M3s and ferraris are there and with such a small increase anyway, its going to do bugger all. I did my bit by swapping my petrol for a diesel thereby reducing my consumption by around 15 litres per week. In any case, I don't see the government putting any effort behind LPG or bio diesel!

Also, anyone else think that the Toyota Prius is a load of bo.....s? How can it possibly be that by lugging around a heavy electric motor and batteries, you could be more environmentally efficient? Ok, perhaps in Holland, but surely, whatever energy you recoup is lost the first time that lot has to be lugged up a hill? I believe this was proved when the hybrid Lexus was tested against a diesel ML. It lost.

Gordon's Tax (again and again and ag......)

Hi All,

Just my pennyworth and it may be political - no excuses. I understood that the new higher rate excise duty was only for new 'gas guzzling' vehicles, which kind of lets me off then! The excise duty increase is only £40 pa, which would not be a consideration in my view for not selecting one of these vehicles. Their attributes fully compensate for the pathetic increase in duty and besides their depreciation and running costs are of much more importance.

Gordon's reason for doing this is simple.- it shows that Labour have (quasi) green principles without really hurting anybody. You will also note that the media (egged on by Labour?) have labled the gas guzzlers as Chelsea Tractors - an obvious dig at the Tory vote. By association all tories are therefore, polluting gas guzzling anti-environment snobs.

If Gordon had really wanted to reduce pollution then he should have addressed the pollution given off by aircraft. For example, most families going on their summer hols abroad by plane will contribute greater pollution to the atmosphere than using their car all year. To suggest an environmental tax on aircraft use would be political suicide especially as it will affect the Labour supporters on their package tours to MaJorca as well as Tory supporters taking a Ryanair flight to the Dordonne.

I think you'll find it's a new threshold and applies to all cars, whenever registered. The previous highest band was F whereas they now have a shiny new band G.
Interestingly, despite all the development and EU4 stuff, the 280CDi is in a higher tax band that the 270 it replaces. Not that this is likely to influence anyone!
